A New Era at Charlotte Motor Speedway
In a significant leadership change, Jessica Fickenscher has been appointed as the General Manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, a flagship venue for Motorsports entertainment. This announcement, made by Marcus Smith, CEO of Speedway Motorsports, highlights the remarkable career trajectory of Fickenscher within the company, showcasing her as a leading figure in the racing world.
Fickenscher's journey with Speedway Motorsports began back in 1997 when she first joined as an intern at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Over the next nearly three decades, she has gained extensive experience across various segments of the organization, contributing to her recent role as Chief Experience Officer. Her promotion to General Manager shows a culmination of years of dedication and hard work, as she takes the reins of day-to-day operations at a venue beloved by racing fans.
Having served as the acting General Manager since April 2025, Fickenscher successfully navigated the venue through one of its busiest periods while President Greg Walter recovered from heart transplant surgery. This experience proved critical as it positioned her to take on the full responsibilities of the General Manager role, where she will now manage the operation’s multiple facets, including organizing events across the NASCAR, NHRA, World of Outlaws, and grassroots racing calendars, in addition to hosting various concerts and festivals.
Fickenscher's commitment to enhancing the guest experience is evident as she endeavors to further improve the world-class entertainment campus that Charlotte Motor Speedway is known for. She also assumes senior leadership at North Wilkesboro Speedway, extending her influence across Speedway Motorsports.
Moreover, Fickenscher's active role in community service through Speedway Children's Charities since 2003 reflects her dedication not just to motorsports but to positively impacting her community. By serving on the Board of Trustees, she has helped promote initiatives aimed at improving the lives of children in need throughout the region.
In her own words, Fickenscher expressed excitement about this new chapter: "To lead one of the most iconic sports and entertainment venues is both humbling and thrilling. I am grateful for the trust placed in me by Marcus Smith and our leadership team, and I look forward to working alongside our talented team to create remarkable experiences for our fans and community."
Alongside this appointment, Greg Walter has expanded his responsibilities as President of Charlotte Motor Speedway. His focus will now also include government and community relations, as well as external affairs for both Charlotte Motor Speedway and North Wilkesboro Speedway. Walter’s role will bridge the organization with community leaders, local stakeholders, and government entities, ensuring that Speedway Motorsports maintains its status as a vital part of the North Carolina community.
Walter, who has been with Speedway Motorsports since 1999, brings over two decades of experience and is known for his incredible relationship-building skills within the motorsports and tourism industries. His new position allows him to advocate for motorsports tourism and enhance the economic impact that both speedways have on their communities.
The elevated roles of both Fickenscher and Walter highlight Speedway Motorsports' commitment to servant leadership, innovation, and teamwork. Marcus Smith articulated confidence in their abilities to drive economic impact and support community growth, stating that their blend of expertise will help propel the organization into a promising future.
Charlotte Motor Speedway has been a bastion for motorsport fans since 1960, embodying the spirit of racing in America.
