Fortune 500 Europe 2026: A Closer Look at the Top Companies on the Continent

2026 Fortune 500 Europe List Unveiled

On September 16, 2026, Fortune released the highly anticipated Fortune 500 Europe ranking, providing insights into the continent's most prominent corporations. The unveil took place at the London Stock Exchange, and this year's list shows a varied landscape of industries with significant growth metrics. Volkswagen emerged as the reigning champion, representing the automotive sector with a reported revenue of $363 billion, despite a 3% increase compared to the previous fiscal year. This solidifies its position at the top, with Shell following closely in the second spot, despite experiencing a revenue decline of 5%.

For the first time since the inception of this list in 2023, Germany has lost its status as the leading country represented. The UK surged ahead with 76 companies making the cut, while Germany dropped to 73 and France to 66. This shift highlights a competitive climate within Europe, indicating stronger business performance and representation in the UK.

Total revenue generated by the companies in this year’s list reached an impressive $15.5 trillion, marking a 4% increase from the previous year. This figure accounts for a substantial share of Europe's economic performance, correlating with approximately half of the continent's GDP and 13% of the global GDP. Despite a decline in overall profit margins to 6.5% from 7.1% in 2024, profits bounced back post a dip in 2025, increasing by 3% and surpassing $1 trillion in total.

In terms of workforce, the combined employee count for the companies on the list decreased marginally by 1% to 34.6 million. However, this resulted in an upswing in revenue per employee by 5% and profit per employee by 4%, underscoring a focus on efficiency within these corporations.

Among the remarkable statistics is the noteworthy rise in female leadership within these firms. This year boasts a record high of 43 female CEOs, which reflects an increase in representation to 8.6% among all companies listed. This remarkable figure contrasts with the under-representation found in the US-based Fortune 500, where only 11% of companies are led by women. Notably, BP, with Meg O'Neill at the helm, stands out as the sole female-led company in the top 10, alongside Engie at rank 39.
