Empowering Severely Disabled Children: COCOLON's Three-Year Journey
The NPO EPO, based in Edogawa, Tokyo, has successfully concluded its three-year project with COCOLON, aimed at improving social participation for severely disabled children and their families. Supported by the Suzaki Welfare Foundation, this initiative has established itself as a significant endeavor in creating opportunities for children with severe disabilities to engage meaningfully in society.
Understanding the Need
In Japan, many children with severe physical and intellectual disabilities require ongoing medical care, yet they often have limited access to safe, enjoyable environments where they can connect with their families and the wider community. Over the past three years, the EPO has committed to increasing the availability of places that cater specifically to these children's needs and fostering societal participation through targeted initiatives.
Major Achievements Over Three Years
1. Events and Seminars
Throughout the project, EPO organized 155 events and seminars, attracting over 2,500 participants. Early in the endeavor, the focus was primarily on the quantity of events. However, it became evident that prioritizing quality and safety led to more sustainable engagement. The organization shifted its strategy to emphasize creating high-quality spaces that attendees could access whenever they wished.
2. Collaborative Events
EPO's final project year saw fruitful collaborations with numerous companies and local governments. Notable events included:
- - Dream Night at Hanayashiki: A magical evening event that welcomed 42 families, achieving a satisfaction rate of 93.8%.
- - Factory Tours with Tokken: An engaging experience for families to participate in a toy manufacturing tour, bridging distances across Tokyo and Yokohama.
- - Original Plush Workshop with DFree: A collaborative project that not only allowed families to participate for free but also helped in securing sponsorships for future events.
- - Regional Events: Acknowledging the need to reach beyond metropolitan areas, EPO started partnering with local welfare organizations to extend their program's impact.
3. Support for New Facilities
With a goal to expand access to professional services, EPO provided guidance for inquiries from potential facilities. This led to the establishment of four new service locations across Tokyo, Kobe, and Osaka, illustrating not just the creation but ongoing connectivity among these new establishments.
Social Recognition and Awards
In the third year, EPO gained significant recognition for its contributions, receiving the coveted
19th Kids Design Award for its impactful initiatives in encouraging societal participation for disabled children and their families. Additionally, they were awarded the
Tokyo Women's Empowerment Award for their outstanding regional contributions, showcasing their commitment to improving quality of life.
Looking Ahead: Establishing Independence
As EPO and COCOLON move into their next stage, their vision is to enhance the sustainability of their operations. Plans include:
- - Continuous Event Programming: Planning for 30 events annually while reassessing pricing and expanding programs tailored for corporate partnership.
- - Fostering High-Quality Service: By continuing to provide high-quality support for newly established services, EPO aims to scale its expertise into a model that can be replicated in other regions.
The ultimate goal is creating a society where families with severely disabled children can access the same recreational and developmental services as other children, ensuring an environment where enjoyment and interaction are part of everyday life.
