The documentary at the heart of this event, 'Rakugoka no Gou,' features
Kairaku-tei Black, a figure known for his controversial yet captivating performances. Described as a performer who transcends compliance in society, Kairaku-tei Black embodies the spirit of Rakugo, which is famous for its ability to laugh in the face of adversities. His lifestyle is marked by extremes, and in a world burdened by strict rules and norms, he represents a disappearing breed of entertainers.
Set against a backdrop of societal challenges, Black’s story begins from a unique upbringing as a mixed-race child of an American soldier and a Japanese woman, spending much of his childhood hidden away in the darkness of movie theaters to escape discrimination. This documentary, crafted meticulously over six and a half years, captures both the essence of Black and the struggles faced by artists during the COVID-19 pandemic. As theaters closed, he began live-streaming Rakugo performances with the help of the director, leading to legal battles that further enriched the narrative presented in the film.
The creative vision behind 'Rakugoka no Gou' belongs to director
Enozono Kyosuke, who has dedicated significant time collaborating with Kairaku-tei Black while also being embroiled in the resulting trials. The film, marked by vast archival footage, demonstrates the creation of an expansive documentary that transcends mere storytelling. It features not just Black but also other Rakugo luminaries such as
Tachikawa Danzosuke,
Suzuzashiya Baruko, and others in supporting roles.
The film was produced in Japan and spans 95 minutes, earning a G rating. It made its debut on December 13, 2025, with subsequent release dates in various cities such as Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nagoya, Okinawa, and Ishigaki, scheduled for early 2026.
As a celebration of comedic genius and human resilience, 'Cinema Yoshu' invites you to experience this unique blend of film and live performance, exploring the vibrant world of Rakugo while diving deep into the life of one of its most distinctive figures.
