Okayama University Initiates Multicultural Programs with Chang Gung University
In a groundbreaking initiative, Okayama University, located in the heart of Okayama City, has launched a multicultural cooperative program with Chang Gung University in Taiwan. This program, which is set to run from July 2 to July 15, 2025, aims to nurture global talents capable of contributing to a sustainable society, aligned with the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
Eighteen students from Okayama University's Faculty of Engineering will collaborate with their peers from Chang Gung University, fostering an environment where English serves as the common language for communication. Throughout the two-week program, students will engage in various activities, nurturing intercultural exchange through discussions and collaborative projects focused on manufacturing. The activities also emphasize hands-on experiences, such as exploring the traditional Japanese craft of making Bizen pottery and understanding the cultural background behind it.
Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Japanese manufacturing culture by visiting traditional craft workshops where they will learn about and even create items, such as Japanese swords (katana). These experiences aim not only to broaden cultural awareness but to foster collaborative creativity among students. A significant project involves students working together to design and create a radio, showcasing the fusion of ideas and creativity from both institutions.
This program is more than just an academic exercise; it's a chance for students to develop a global perspective and a strong sense of social responsibility by participating in intercultural dialogue. It aligns with Okayama University's mission to cultivate talents that can contribute to regional and international communities.
Additionally, this initiative is part of a broader social impact project that aims to make a positive contribution to society. The program will not only involve the Faculty of Engineering but intends to collaborate across various departments within the university, expanding its reach and effectiveness.
Students have expressed eager anticipation for the experiences ahead, viewing this opportunity as a transformative learning journey. The skills, knowledge, and friendships forged during this program may well serve as foundations for future collaborations and innovations. As this initiative unfolds, the university looks forward to continuing its commitment to social engagement and educational excellence through diverse and rich cultural exchanges.
