Collaboration to Enhance Badminton Spectatorship
The Japan Badminton Association (BAJ) has announced an exciting collaborative project with women's universities aimed at enhancing the value of badminton watching and expanding its audience, especially among women and youth. This initiative is part of the forthcoming establishment of a new Department of Economics at Women's University, set to launch in 2027. The BAJ, under the leadership of President Mitsuru Murai, aims to grow the 'Badminton Family' — currently comprising about 300,000 registered players — to a notable 1 million fans.
Goals of the Partnership
This joint venture is intended not only to foster educational growth but also to create unique spectator experiences that will appeal to a younger demographic. With a focus on boosting the spectatorship value, students from the Department of Home Economics are set to work on analyzing various aspects of the viewing experience including event organization, merchandise, social media engagement, and partnership strategies. They will leverage their academic knowledge of economics to generate insights that can lead to practical solutions for enhancing the field of badminton.
Aiming for 1 Million Badminton Fans
BAJ's ambitious target of 1 million badminton aficionados embodies a broader strategy to promote the sport and make it accessible to everyone, regardless of prior experience. To do this, the collaborative project will promote educational activities that engage students in identifying societal issues and developing logical solutions through hands-on experiences within the realm of badminton. Such initiatives are anticipated to reinforce the link between economic activities and sports, further bridging the gap between students and real-world applications.
Key Activities of the Project
- - Special Lectures (June - July 2026): The project kicks off with special lectures at Women's University, led by representatives from the Japan Badminton Association. These sessions will focus on the current state of badminton publicity, spectator businesses, media exposure, and partnerships, aiming to foster a deeper understanding of existing challenges within the sport.
- - Fieldwork Experience (July 2026): Students will participate in the 'Daihatsu Japan Open 2026' from July 14 to July 19, gaining firsthand spectator experiences. This practical exposure will allow them to closely observe factors such as event execution, audience engagement, marketing strategies, and merchandise flow, helping them to better articulate badminton's allure and challenges.
- - Workshops (September - October 2026): Building on previous activities, students will utilize their economic insights and youth perspectives in workshops, brainstorming proposals that can aid in realizing the vision of reaching 1 million badminton fans through innovative spectator engagement strategies.
- - Policy Presentation (November - December 2026): Students will consolidate their findings and proposals, presenting them to BAJ in a bid to provide valuable references that inform future strategies.
Statements from Leadership
President of the Japan Badminton Association, Mitsuru Murai, reflected on the importance of this initiative, stating, “As we celebrate our 80th anniversary in 2026, expanding our reach and making badminton accessible to more people is critical. Through this project, we hope to foster a deeper connection between badminton and the younger generation.”
Dairi Igazaki, the designated head of the future Department of Economics at Women's University, noted that “Analyzing sports through the lens of economics provides students with a unique opportunity to tackle real societal challenges. We aim to guide our students in uncovering new values and translating that knowledge into actionable proposals.”
Future Aspirations
Women's University, established as Japan's first organized women's higher education institution, continues to evolve, bringing forth new academic programs such as a Department of Economics, set to enrich students' understanding of economics and the intersections with sports. This collaborative project serves as a step toward nurturing critical thinking and analytical skills, aligning with the institution's mission to prepare students for the complexities of modern society.
