Shanghai Electric and Econergy's Green Initiative in Romania
On October 1, 2025, Shanghai Electric marked a significant milestone by signing the second phase of the 342 MW photovoltaic project in Parau, Romania, in collaboration with Econergy Renewable Energy Ltd. This project represents a critical step in advancing clean energy solutions, aimed at providing sustainable electricity to both residential and commercial sectors.
Shanghai Electric, known for its commitment to renewable energy, has put forth efforts to diversify energy sources and enhance environmental sustainability in Central and Eastern Europe. As stated by Wu Lei, the Party Committee Secretary and President of Shanghai Electric Group, the company plans to use its technological prowess not only in wind and solar energy but also in energy storage to facilitate the region's ecological transition. The ambition is to strengthen its foothold in Central and Eastern Europe, offering tailored solutions to help Romania in its energy transformation.
Econergy's partnership with Shanghai Electric also marks a strategic expansion for the company in Romania and the broader Central Eastern European market. Andrea Loi, Vice President of Operations at Econergy, conveyed his team's confidence in Shanghai Electric's technical expertise and project execution capabilities, which are pivotal for ensuring the successful roll-out of this historical project.
This new phase is notably the fourth solar initiative undertaken by Shanghai Electric in Romania. It builds on the successful commissioning of the first phase of the Parau project, which boasts a capacity of 91.4 MW and has been operational since November 2024. This phase provides renewable energy to approximately 70,000 households, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions by around 6,800 tons annually. Shanghai Electric’s portfolio in Romania further includes a 56 MW solar project in Schultu, which is now in its two-year warranty and operational phase after passing provisional acceptance in June of this year.
Currently, Shanghai Electric's projects in Romania collectively have an installed capacity of about 550 MW, reinforcing the country’s long-term clean energy development. On the same day as the contract signing, Wu Lei held meetings with various officials, including Chen Feng, the Chinese Ambassador to Romania, and Istvan-Lorant Antal, the President of Romania's Energy Commission. Antal emphasized Romania's active progress in transforming its energy structure, particularly in sectors like photovoltaic energy and power distribution, looking forward to collaborations with exceptional companies like Shanghai Electric.
Moreover, Wu Lei's discussions with senior managers from Austria’s OMV Group illustrate Shanghai Electric's role in exploring new cooperative opportunities in the region's energy sector, further solidifying its leadership in promoting renewable energy sources in Romania.
As the global focus intensifies on environmental issues, initiatives like this partnership highlight the importance of multinational cooperation in addressing energy challenges. Shanghai Electric and Econergy are not only contributing to Romania’s energy landscape but are also setting an example of proactive engagement in the responsible development of renewable energy sources.
