Enhancing Transportation Safety with VIVOTEK's AI Solutions
In a significant move to improve safety and efficiency in transportation, VIVOTEK has successfully installed an AI-driven surveillance system at the Lillestrøm Bus Terminal in Norway. This initiative not only aims to bolster the safety of passengers and bus drivers but also enhances the operational effectiveness of one of the busiest transport hubs in the region.
About Lillestrøm Bus Terminal
The Lillestrøm Bus Terminal, managed by Akershus Kollektivterminaler (AKT FKF), plays a crucial role in the Oslo area's public transport network, accommodating over 450,000 passenger journeys daily. As a key transport node, the terminal demands comprehensive monitoring solutions to ensure safety and operational efficiency across both indoor and outdoor spaces.
The Challenge
Before the deployment of VIVOTEK's AI technology, the terminal struggled with several operational hurdles typical of busy transit stations. Limited visibility in both indoor and outdoor zones often compromised situational awareness, particularly in high-density passenger areas. Blind spots behind buses posed serious safety risks, raising the potential for accidents during bus departures and arrivals. Furthermore, traditional surveillance infrastructures proved inefficient, leading to time-consuming incident investigations and high maintenance costs. These challenges underscored the urgent need for a more intelligent, integrated, and scalable surveillance solution.
Implementing the AI-Powered Solution
To address these challenges, VIVOTEK, alongside partners Nimbus AS and Vicon Norway AS, devised a comprehensive surveillance strategy that integrated panoramic indoor monitoring and extensive outdoor coverage. The deployment included advanced 180° panoramic AI cameras for indoor monitoring and specialized outdoor AI cameras to track key locations such as bus platforms and parking areas. The system enhances situational awareness by effectively monitoring traffic flow and passenger movements while ensuring safety and security.
Additionally, the system’s AI capabilities facilitate effective data handling, with Edge AI analytics allowing metadata to be forwarded automatically to the network video recorder (NVR). This intelligence also supports rapid incident investigation via VIVOTEK’s Deep Search, enabling operators to swiftly locate incidents involving people and vehicles.
Enhancing Safety with Direct Visibility
A notable feature of the AI solution is the installation of RX9502 Video Receivers across all 16 bus platforms. These devices provide real-time rear-view footage for drivers, significantly reducing blind spots and improving on-site safety. By replacing conventional PCs with these efficient receivers, the terminal not only lowered total ownership costs but also enhanced system stability, ensuring smooth video transmission.
The entire system operates seamlessly within a VIVOTEK NVR in a centralized monitoring setup, allowing for future expansions and scalability. Plans for implementing VORTEX Connect will enable flexible access, extended AI services, and secure data sharing, all while establishing Lillestrøm as a central hub that connects additional terminals within the network.
Key Benefits Achieved
After the implementation of the VIVOTEK AI system, several benefits emerged:
- - Heightened Passenger and Driver Safety: Enhanced surveillance capabilities ensure that all areas of the terminal are closely monitored.
- - Clear Visibility Enhancements: Drivers have improved visibility behind their buses, thus minimizing the likelihood of accidents.
- - Speedier Incident Response: The new system enhances the efficiency of incident investigations, allowing for quick resolutions.
- - Stability and Low Maintenance: The newly implemented architecture is designed to be low maintenance, providing stability and reliability.
- - Future Ready Solution: VIVOTEK's scalable architecture prepares the terminal for future growth and technological enhancements.
Feedback from Leadership
The initiative has garnered positive feedback from the leadership at AKT, with CEO Jafar Altememy and Project Manager Roy Helge Solvang expressing their satisfaction with the project’s outcomes. They emphasized how the solution aligns perfectly with AKT's long-term safety and development plans, reinforcing their commitment to ensuring a safe travel environment for everyone utilizing the terminal.
This pioneering initiative demonstrates how advanced AI technologies can revolutionize safety protocols and operational efficiency in public transportation, setting a benchmark for future developments in the industry.
