TrueCar Honors Army Veteran with New Vehicle
In a heartfelt event that showcased the importance of community support for veterans, TrueCar, Inc. awarded a brand new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to Army veteran Yusuf Henriques through its DrivenToDrive program. This initiative, designed to honor veterans and their families, aims to address their mobility needs while fostering connections within the community.
On December 11, 2024, representatives from TrueCar and Sheehy Auto Stores presented Henriques with the vehicle in a ceremony attended by community members and fellow veterans. The occasion not only celebrated Henriques' past service but also highlighted his current endeavors to assist other veterans.
Hailing from Alexandria, Virginia, Henriques joined the Army after completing high school, serving as a combat medic during four tours. Tragically, he was medically discharged due to injuries sustained during his service. Transitioning back to civilian life proved to be a challenge for Henriques, especially as a single father to three young daughters. He faced hardships including homelessness and navigating the complexities of the benefits system, where the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization played a crucial role in securing the benefits he was entitled to.
The influence of personal tragedy propelled Henriques into a mission of advocacy and research. In 2012, after the suicide of a close friend and former Marine, he immersed himself in research related to mental health. His work focused on understanding the genetic underpinnings that could lead to conditions such as anxiety and PTSD, with a vision to save lives through awareness and action.
Motivated by his findings, Henriques founded IndyGeneUS, a company dedicated to enhancing diversity in medical research. By making clinical trials accessible and representative, he aims to improve the efficacy of medical treatments for a broader population. One of his innovations includes the development of biomarkers for PTSD, as well as a device designed to detect toxin exposure.
TrueCar’s DrivenToDrive program was inspired by Army Ranger Cory Remsburg, a critically injured veteran who serves as an ambassador advocating for service members. Since its establishment in 2016, the program has delivered 11 vehicles to deserving veterans, reaffirming TrueCar's commitment to enhancing the lives of those who’ve served.
Following the award presentation, Henriques expressed gratitude for the vehicle, stating, “This incredible honor from TrueCar means a great deal. Serving my fellow veterans is a passion, and this new vehicle will empower me to continue making a positive difference in their lives. I'm truly humbled by this opportunity.”
In echoing Henriques' sentiment, Jantoon Reigersman, TrueCar’s President and CEO, acknowledged the inspiration drawn from veterans like Henriques, remarking that they highlight the commitment to creating a supportive environment for veterans’ transition into civilian life.
The partnership of TrueCar with DAV and Sheehy Auto Stores further emphasizes the organization's commitment to supporting veterans in their journeys, enhancing their lives, and ensuring they have the resources needed to thrive post-service. DAV CEO Barry Jesinoski endorsed the efforts, saying, “We are grateful to TrueCar for recognizing Yusuf's outstanding service and dedication. This generous gift will undoubtedly enhance his ability to continue supporting fellow veterans.”
