Introduction to 'The Curtain Rises'

This film is a heartwarming and inspiring coming-of-age story that resonates with audiences of all ages. It is based on the debut novel 'The Curtain Rises,' written by renowned Japanese playwright Oriza Hirata in 2012. The screenplay was crafted by Kohei Kiyasu, whose previous work 'The Kirishima Thing' received critical acclaim, and the film was directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro, celebrated for his work on the 'Bayside Shakedown' series.

Motohiro's deep affection for theater is evident in the film’s structure and the depiction of the high school drama scene, creating a powerful emotional experience for the viewers.

The cast features performances by the vibrant members of the idol group Momoiro Clover Z, selected to portray the leading roles. They underwent workshops led by Hirata, honing their craft before assuming their characters. The group includes:
  • - Kanako Momota as Saori, the thoughtful and somewhat reserved drama club head.
  • - Shiori Tamai as the princess-like actress Yuko, who has an innate talent.
  • - Reni Takagi brings to life Garuru, a whimsical character full of surprises.
  • - Amu Ariyasu features as Nakanishi, a stoic transfer student known for her fierce dedication.
  • - Ayaka Sasaki portrays Akemi, the youngest member and the life of the party, displaying maturity beyond her years.

Under Motohiro’s guidance, each actor's unique traits shine through, breathing life into the relatable characters. The supporting cast includes notable stars such as Haruka Kuroki, who won the Best Actress award at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival, and the versatile Yuichi Mukai, alongside seasoned actors like Hirotaro Shiga and Michiko Shimizu, each bringing their own distinctive flair.
