HandMade In Japan Fes’ 2026: A Unique Exploration of Wildlife and Human Interaction
In the vibrant realm of creativity, the
HandMade In Japan Fes’ 2026 marks a milestone with the debut of
HMJ Re:Edit on July 11-12, 2026, at
Tokyo Big Sight. This innovative initiative aims to foster new insights and interactions through a creative lens. The first theme,
"Wild Animals in the Mountains and Human Life," serves as a catalyst for exploring the coexistence of humans and wildlife through experiential content.
Understanding Our Relationship with Wildlife
The recent rise in media coverage regarding bear encounters, crop damage, and other interactions between wildlife and human society reflects a growing concern. In 2023, approximately
9,000 bear captures were permitted, contributing to the over
16 billion yen in annual agricultural damages caused by deer, wild boars, and other wild animals. However, opportunities to learn about the ecological background, lifestyle changes in our communities due to wildlife presence, and the aftermath of such captures are often missing.
HMJ Re:Edit aims to bridge this gap by encouraging participants to contemplate life cycles, the interconnectedness of nature, and our individual responsibilities toward wildlife.
An Engaging, Hands-On Experience
Participants at the event will have the opportunity to see, touch, and create in a variety of interactive settings designed to raise awareness about wildlife issues. Attendees can explore
panel exhibitions displaying the current status of wild animals, including bears and deer, and learn about their habits through engaging questions like: "What are bears really like?" and "Why do they venture close to towns?"
Additionally, a marketplace will showcase creations made from animal materials and game meat. Creators will present unique items such as accessories crafted from deer antlers and leather goods made from wild boar skin, allowing visitors to appreciate the stories behind these materials and reflect on their significance in human life.
Workshops offer hands-on experiences, allowing participants to create their own keychains or rings from these animal-derived materials while considering their natural origins. This interaction amplifies the dialogue around respect for life and our environment.
Culinary Corner: A food truck will serve gourmet game meat dishes, emphasizing a mindful approach to consuming animals that have contributed to agricultural protection efforts. Elevated understanding of game meat's nutritional value highlights its sustainability and promotes healthier eating habits.
A Platform for Inquiry, Not Answers
HMJ Re:Edit is not a venue for delivering definitive answers; rather, it aims to inspire participants to take home their questions. The initiative emphasizes exposure to various perspectives without endorsing specific viewpoints. By confronting the realities of human-wildlife interactions, attendees are encouraged to engage with complex discussions surrounding food sources and materials sustainably while fostering a deeper appreciation of the natural world.
Organized by
Creema Inc., an advocate for creator empowerment through its marketplace and various events, this festival aims to create a memorable experience that touches various senses and encourages personal creativity. The gathering will feature
over 3,000 creators, showcasing their unique products and experiences designed to promote Japan's rich craft culture.
