Festival de las Almas 2026: A Grand Celebration of Traditions

Jalisco, Mexico is gearing up for an extraordinary event to celebrate the rich traditions of the Day of the Dead with the Festival de las Almas 2026. This cultural festival, a joint effort by the Jalisco Tourism Secretariat and the State Entertainment Agency, aims to promote the significance of this day, diversify tourism, and showcase the state's vibrant cultural heritage.

Expanding the Festival

As the second edition of the festival, this year's event sees a substantial increase in participation, expanding from six municipalities in 2025 to twelve in 2026. Celebrations will take place from October 24 to November 15, allowing visitors to experience Jalisco's deep-rooted traditions through various festivities, including altars, exhibitions, parades, and musical performances.

The twelve participating municipalities include familiar destinations like Guadalajara, Zapopan, and Puerto Vallarta, along with newcomers such as San Pedro Tlaquepaque, Tequila, Sayula, Mazamitla, Lagos de Moreno, and Cocula. The central theme, "one state, many identities, one shared memory," serves to unify these diverse cultural expressions into a cohesive celebration.

Unique Events Across Regions

Each municipality will offer its own unique flavor to the festival. In Guadalajara, the El Espíritu del Charro exhibition from October 30 to November 13 will feature monumental catrina figures in Plaza Guadalajara and a grand parade on October 31 from 6 to 8 PM. Visitors can also witness projection mapping on the Cathedral along with nocturnal theatrical tours at the Belén and Mezquitán cemeteries.

Tlajomulco de Zúñiga will host the immersive experience of El Mictlán, featuring a monumental arch and performances of La Llorona on canoes. In San Pedro Tlaquepaque, around 80 activities, including parades and cultural processions, will celebrate the town's creative arts.

Zapopan's Andador pedestrian walkway will become a vibrant Path of Corn on November 20, while Tequila will connect its iconic agave landscape to traditional fairs and intimate cultural tours.

Honor and Tradition

In Sayula, depictions honoring writer Juan Rulfo will be among the altars, while Cocula will share its mariachi heritage through musical performances at local venues. Mazamitla, with its stunning landscapes, will delight visitors with catrina fashion shows and gourmet mountain cuisine.

Visitors to Zapotlanejo can look forward to a stunning 22-meter-tall Catrina and cinematic sets that celebrate the local textile industry, whereas in Lagos de Moreno, a horseback parade featuring charros will highlight the district's equestrian traditions. Finally, Puerto Vallarta will light up its waterfront promenade with Boats of Light and other decor, inviting a festive atmosphere.
