Consumers Energy Supports Customers During Harsh Winter Weather
In the wake of an intense cold snap, Consumers Energy has initiated outreach to its customers in Michigan, particularly those who will be facing higher energy bills in the coming weeks. The January cold drastically increased energy consumption, particularly natural gas, which rose by 25% compared to the same period last year.
Lauren Snyder, the company’s senior vice president and chief customer officer, acknowledged the difficulties caused by the frigid temperatures, stating, "We know furnaces had to run much more often to cope with January's chill, and that can be tough." She emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting customers during this challenging time.
Throughout February, Consumers Energy aims to connect with its customers, offering insights into their bills and providing strategies for energy savings. The utility company recognizes that higher bills can lead to significant stress, and they are determined to assist customers in understanding their energy usage and exploring available support options, especially for those struggling financially.
To aid their outreach efforts, Consumers Energy has mobilized community affairs teams who have been distributing essential items like food, hats, gloves, and hand warmers to warming shelters and nonprofit organizations in various cities across the state. These initiatives include assistance in places such as Lansing, Flint, Saginaw, Westland, Kalamazoo, and Jackson.
Moreover, the utility has pledged $5 million to 11 nonprofit organizations focused on aiding individuals with energy bill payments. The company is also identifying customers who may be particularly impacted by the harsh weather conditions to tailor direct assistance that can help mitigate their energy costs while promoting energy efficiency.
Consumers Energy has mandated that any customers apprehensive about rising bills should reach out immediately for assistance. Customers can contact 2-1-1 to access nonprofit resources and financial help, as well as visit

Despite the recent weather challenges, Consumers Energy has maintained reliable service, managing both electricity and natural gas systems effectively even in extreme conditions. Snyder noted that a substantial number of employees were also deployed to Mississippi to aid in restoring power following a major storm there, reflecting the company's broader commitment to stability and reliability in energy provision.
As the winter progresses, Consumers Energy assures its customers that they are dedicated to finding solutions to ease the financial burdens imposed by surging energy bills. Snyder concluded, "This winter has been incredibly challenging for Michigan, and those challenges won't go away even as temperatures rise slightly. We’re committed to keeping our costs down and supporting our friends and neighbors."
As Michigan's largest energy provider, Consumers Energy delivers natural gas and electricity to approximately 6.8 million residents statewide, covering all 68 counties in the Lower Peninsula. Their focus remains on ensuring that reliable energy services remain accessible around the clock, even during the most difficult seasons.
