College Board Boosts Scholarship Support to Over $32 Million for Students Through 2030
College Board Expands BigFuture Scholarships
In a groundbreaking move, the College Board has announced a significant expansion of its BigFuture Scholarships program, now totaling over $32 million. This initiative is set to support students through the class of 2030, with an additional investment of $6.5 million aimed at helping young individuals plan their future after high school.
Since its inception in 2019, the BigFuture program has already provided more than $23 million in scholarships to over 24,000 students across all 50 states. This expansion reflects the College Board's commitment to fostering opportunities for students, ensuring that they have the resources and guidance needed to pursue higher education.
Amy Reitz, Senior Vice President of BigFuture, stated, "Every student deserves the opportunity to own their future after high school. The BigFuture scholarships turn aspirations into action, helping teens dream big and take concrete steps to realize those dreams. This investment reinforces our commitment to opening doors for all students, especially those who need the most support as they plan their next steps."
The BigFuture platform (bigfuture.org) is a free online resource that has already assisted millions of students in exploring career paths, planning for college, and discovering funding options. Users can access personalized tools to guide them at every stage of their planning process.
Each month, BigFuture awards two scholarships of $40,000 and hundreds of $500 scholarships to students across the nation for completing simple, actionable planning steps. Unlike traditional scholarship programs, BigFuture scholarships are open to all students, requiring no essays, test scores, or minimum GPAs. Eligibility is based on completing real planning steps, such as exploring various careers, compiling a list of colleges, and learning about financial aid opportunities.
Currently, 60% of scholarship recipients come from low-income backgrounds, and nearly half are first-generation college students. This demonstrates the program's success in providing access and opportunities to those who typically face barriers to higher education. Students from families earning less than $60,000 annually have double the chances of winning scholarships, as they receive two entries for each completed step.
Dinora Ramírez, whose daughter received a $40,000 BigFuture Scholarship, remarked, "I only have a GED. This scholarship will break the cycle in our family; my children can now go to college." The impact of this program extends beyond just the students; families are witnessing life-changing benefits. Allison Ramírez shared, "My mom and dad no longer have to worry. They can allocate more funds to my sister's education, and I can pursue a four-year university to become a chemist or a lawyer."
As of this month, students in the Class of 2028—currently in 10th grade—are officially eligible for BigFuture scholarships by completing planning steps on bigfuture.org through to their senior year.
