As Japan prepares for the Grand Sumo Tournament in May, a unique book fair will be hosted at the Ginza Tsutaya Bookstore to celebrate the launch of the new book, Sumo and Design. The fair runs from April 27, 2026 to May 31, 2026, and will showcase the evolving art and culture of sumo fashion.

Event Details

Located in GINZA SIX 6F, Ginza Tsutaya Bookstore, the fair will feature a range of activities and special merchandise associated with the book. The central theme focuses on traditional sumo outfits, specifically the kesho-mawashi (ceremonial aprons) and sometsuke kimono (dyed kimono). These vibrant pieces of clothing, rich in history, have been crafted by skilled artisans, making this event a must-visit for enthusiasts of Japanese culture and design.

Among the highlights, visitors will have the chance to see an actual kesho-mawashi worn by former wrestler Kita-jin (formerly known as Endo) on display. This garment not only represents the pinnacle of sumo fashion but also showcases exquisite embroidery and silk fabric that illustrates the grandeur associated with the sport. Other exhibits will include various fabrics used in the making of kesho-mawashi, alongside numerous sumo-related goods.

The fair will feature several exclusive items for purchase, including:

1. Kinran Silk Fabrics: Authentic silk used in kesho-mawashi, adorned with intricate designs woven with gold and silver threads, available in small for ¥5,500 and large for ¥33,000 (tax included).
