University of Maryland and American University Students Drive Transportation Innovation Through Datathon
In an inspiring demonstration of student ingenuity, participants from the University of Maryland (UMD) and American University (AU) gathered for the 7th Annual Smith Analytics Consortium Datathon Finale on April 10, 2026. With a focus on transportation solutions, this year’s event was notably sponsored by the Maryland Department of Information Technology (DoIT), marking a significant milestone as it represented the state's inaugural sponsorship of this esteemed competition.
The datathon, which was hosted in collaboration with AU and Deloitte, encouraged interdisciplinary participation and participation from students across various disciplines, allowing for diverse perspectives and innovative ideas to flourish. Over a competitive 15-day period, 21 teams consisting of both undergraduate and graduate students utilized data from Maryland's open data portal to devise creative solutions to address the pressing transportation challenges faced by the state. The competition attracted a total prize pool of $7,500, made available to incentivize the best ideas.
The overall winners, Team Syntax Errors, which included participants from both universities, clinched the top spot along with a $3,000 cash prize. Their project proposed effective first- and last-mile improvements for commuters in specific Maryland areas, notably Baltimore City and counties such as Montgomery, Prince George's, Baltimore, and Anne Arundel. Their innovative solution proposed the implementation of micro-transit feeders and at-home shuttle services to connect residents with larger transit hubs more efficiently.
The victory was particularly historic as it represented the first time a cross-university team triumphed in the competition, underscoring the potential of collaborative efforts in addressing real-world issues.
At the event, DoIT Secretary Katie Savage delivered an inspiring message, emphasizing the transformative nature of the competition and the importance of leveraging the skills acquired during such experiences to foster meaningful change. "One of the best things about being young is that you haven't yet learned to stop asking questions," Savage remarked. She encouraged all participants to maintain their spirit of innovation, whether they choose to pursue careers in public, private sectors, or entrepreneurship.
Smith School Dean Prabhudev Konana also highlighted how the datathon aligns with the strategic pillars of the Smith School, reinforcing the principles of experiential learning and community service. "We believe today’s students possess remarkable creativity and skills to tackle real problems," he noted, expressing gratitude to both the students for their dedication and the sponsors for their continued support.
The event concluded with teams presenting their findings to a panel of esteemed judges, including leaders from the Maryland state government and Deloitte, showcasing the potential impact of their proposals.

Participants like Sahej Singh expressed excitement about presenting their data-driven solutions to state officials, highlighting the real-world significance of their work. Fellow contestant Matthew Park found the experience invaluable for both networking and applying classroom knowledge in practical settings.
The datathon’s success not only illustrates the students' abilities to innovate effectively but also suggests a future of collaborative problem-solving with real implications for the Maryland community. The Maryland DoIT has already expressed interest in maintaining their partnership for subsequent datathons, affirming the positive developments stemming from student-led initiatives.
