AANA Celebrates Introduction of Key Nursing Legislation

The American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) has expressed their strong support for the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act of 2025, which was recently introduced in both the House and Senate. This legislation is seen as an essential step in securing crucial funding for nursing programs across the nation amidst a growing shortage of healthcare professionals.

Importance of Title VIII

The Title VIII programs are vital for maintaining the health and well-being of American citizens. Last fiscal year, they received only $305 million, a sharp contrast to the over $18 billion allocated to Graduate Medical Education (GME). Given the scale of the current nursing shortage, such a funding discrepancy raises concerns about the future of nursing as a profession.

According to the AANA, the Title VIII programs help to graduate thousands of nurses, including over 8,000 advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and more than 1,300 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) annually. Many of these healthcare providers serve in medically underserved regions or rural locales, making this funding a critical investment in public health.

Support from Key Legislators

The AANA extends gratitude to several bipartisan leaders, including Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Susan Collins (R-ME), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) who are pivotal in advancing this legislation. Furthermore, House Nursing Caucus co-chairs, including Representatives Dave Joyce (R-OH) and Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), along with vice-chairs Jen Kiggans (R-VA) and Lauren Underwood (D-IL), are recognized for their leadership in championing nursing issues.

AANA President Jan Setnor, MSN, CRNA, Col. (Ret), USAFR, NC, emphasized the importance of these nursing programs stating, “The Title VIII Nursing Workforce programs are critical to keeping America healthy and provide a high return on investment.” The funding enables nursing schools to produce graduates who enter the workforce trained to meet the needs of diverse populations.

Call to Action

As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, the need for adequate funding and support for nursing education becomes increasingly significant. The AANA urges Congress to act promptly to reauthorize Title VIII and ensure that these essential programs receive the funding they require.

Setnor remarked, “We increasingly see Americans from all walks of life receiving care from CRNAs and other APRNs. We are the backbone of the healthcare system, and these programs are necessary for delivering the highest quality care.”

With landmark legislation like the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act on the table, the AANA is hopeful that these critical funding needs will be met, thereby solidifying the future of nursing in America. Supporting our nurses today ensures healthier communities tomorrow.

Conclusion

The introduction of the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act of 2025 represents a significant opportunity to reinforce the funding structure for nursing education. As we collectively tackle healthcare challenges, proactive measures such as this legislation will play a crucial role in ensuring an adequately trained nursing workforce across the United States. The AANA continues to advocate for necessary reforms and funding to support nurses and the healthcare services they provide.
