Children from Iwate Shine on Stage at the Symphony Orchestra Event

On August 6, 2026, the city of Morioka in Iwate Prefecture will host the 'Tohoku Dream Project: Fun Orchestra in Iwate', an inspiring event that showcases the talents of local children alongside the esteemed Japan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. This initiative aims to foster growth through music, allowing children to enhance their skills in traditional performing arts and musical activities at schools while experiencing the joy of performing in an orchestra.

The Tohoku Dream Project: An Overview

Established after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Japan Philharmonic has been actively engaged in supporting disaster-affected areas through music. Since its inception, the orchestra has conducted over 380 activities, focusing on uplifting the spirits of those impacted by the disaster. Beginning in 2019, the 'Tohoku Dream Project' was initiated to further assist regional recovery by showcasing the cultural richness of Tohoku through orchestral performances featuring local children.

Each year, talented groups from schools and local communities have joined the orchestra in performance, with past concerts held in Morioka six times and four times in Fukushima. This collaborative effort aims not only to bring joy to the audience but also to instill a sense of pride in the participating children. Additionally, the project emphasizes the importance of education and skill-building through a series of pre-concert workshops, mini-concerts, and learning sessions with professional musicians. Many participants have reported remarkable personal growth and inspiration stemming from these collaborative experiences.

Highlights of the Upcoming Performance

The upcoming concert will take place at the Morioka Citizen Cultural Hall's main hall, featuring conductor Takashi Sonoda and renowned soloists, including Yoko Ebihara. The event will incorporate a grand ballet performance by the Stardancers Ballet Company, providing a dynamic blend of orchestral music and dance.

The concert will unfold in four parts:
  • - Part 1: Welcome to the Ball! Featuring Tchaikovsky's 'Eugene Onegin' and Johann Strauss II's 'The Blue Danube'.
  • - Part 2: The World of Ballet and Orchestra with selections from Tchaikovsky's 'The Nutcracker'.
