SUNMI Appointed as Principal Participating Organization of PCI SSC to Shape Payment Security Standards

SUNMI's New Journey as a Principal Participating Organization at PCI SSC

In an exciting development for the tech and payment security sectors, SUNMI, a global leader in smart commercial devices, has ascended to the role of Principal Participating Organization (PPO) within the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC). This significant recognition was announced during the PCI SSC Community Meeting held in Bangkok in November 2025, marking a strategic transition for SUNMI from merely implementing payment security standards to actively shaping them.

Transforming from Implementer to Contributor

For SUNMI, payment security has always been a core competency. The company has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to applying the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) across millions of its intelligent terminals in over 200 countries. With advancements such as optimized Android data encryption, remote patch management systems, and simplified “One-Click Compliance” tools designed specifically for small merchants, SUNMI has positioned itself as a pioneer in the implementation of these standards.

As a PPO, SUNMI will collaborate with other industry giants like Amazon, Apple, and Qualcomm to set new security standards. The company will provide practical insights from its extensive experience, contributing to areas such as security optimizations for Android, IoT device authentication, and payment adaptations for varying scenarios. This ensures that the new standards will be practical and meet the diverse requirements across the entire payment value chain.

Key Focus Areas for Standardization

SUNMI will concentrate on three main areas moving forward:
1. Terminal Insight Exchange: Sharing valuable knowledge related to Android optimization, device management, and scenario-specific customizations.
2. Supporting Security Innovations: Aiding in the development of frameworks compatible with emerging technologies like IoT and AI.
3. Enhancing Ecosystem Security: Advocating for standards that protect the entire payment ecosystem, from terminals to cloud services.

A Joint Mission for a Secure Future

"Being a PPO is not just a title, but a mission," exclaimed Sam Su, SUNMI's rotating President and CMO. "We will now infuse the practical experiences from millions of devices worldwide into the foundational structure of future security standards, contributing to a more robust and trustworthy digital commerce environment for all."

At the Bangkok event, SUNMI engaged with PCI SSC Executive Director Gina Gobeyn and Vice President for the Asia-Pacific region, Yew Kuann Cheng. Gobeyn remarked on the priceless expertise SUNMI brings, expressing anticipation for their practical perspective to ensure the standards remain relevant for merchants and consumers alike.

In its new role, SUNMI will actively participate in key PCI SSC working groups focusing on terminal and IoT security, effectively bridging the gap between standardizers and end-users.

Understanding PCI SSC

The PCI Security Standards Council is a global forum that spearheads the development, maintenance, and promotion of data security standards to safeguard payment accounts across the globe. SUNMI's new position within this council solidifies its commitment to enhancing global payment security measures, ensuring they evolve alongside technological advancements and meet the growing demands of the digital age.
