The Story of the Lilac-Shaped Cauldron for the Asian Winter Games



The recent Asian Winter Games held in Harbin brought a remarkable visual experience with the unveiling of a lilac-shaped cauldron. This striking structure represents not only an artistic achievement but also embodies the cultural essence of Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. Designed by the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University (AADTHU), the cauldron became a symbol of the games, lighting up the event amidst the backdrop of ice and snow.

A Creative Journey



This endeavor began with an urgent call from the Harbin Asian Winter Games Organizing Committee in mid-August. Ma Sai, the Dean, and Professor Fan Yinliang of the Industrial Design Department immediately mobilized their team, consisting of dedicated teachers and students. Despite being in the midst of summer break, they held nightly brainstorming sessions, generating ten comprehensive design proposals within weeks.

Ultimately, the lilac design emerged victorious among submissions from twelve competitors. The lilac, which is also Harbin's city flower, symbolizes resilience and elegance, resonating with the unyielding spirit of the local people. The winning proposal was approved shortly after its submission, paving the way for an intense design and construction phase that would culminate in the games' opening.
