Philippine Students to Experience Japanese Culture Through JENESYS Program in October 2024

In October 2024, a group of ten university students from the Philippines will journey to Japan as part of the JENESYS program aimed at deepening understanding between Japan and the Philippines. This initiative, endorsed by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, encourages cultural exchange and cooperation.

The students have shown a keen interest in Japan's rich cultural tapestry, and the program combines cultural lectures, site visits, and even homestays, promising a comprehensive introduction to Japanese life. The aim is to strengthen bonds of friendship and trust between the two nations while enhancing their appreciation for Japanese culture, from traditional practices to contemporary pop culture.

Schedule Overview

From October 14 to October 21, 2024, the group will delve into various aspects of Japanese culture. The program kicks off with an orientation on the first day, followed by an exploration of anime culture at the Tokyo Animation Station.

On October 15, they will visit the historic Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura, where they will learn through guided tours and lectures from Professor Ogawa Yoshiko at Yokohama National University. The following day takes them from Tokyo to Gifu Prefecture, where they will be welcomed by local officials and participate in a visit to a local sake brewery, Miwa Sake Brewing.

October 17 will feature cultural immersion with hands-on experiences such as making traditional wagashi (Japanese sweets) and attending a tea ceremony at Hougenji. A visit will also be made to Gifu University for an educational exchange, leading up to meeting their host families for a memorable homestay experience.

The fifth day will be reserved for continuing their homestay, which exposes the students to everyday Japanese life, culminating in farewell celebrations hosted by their families. The group will transition to Aichi Prefecture on the 19th to prepare for a workshop presentation report scheduled for October 20, before returning to Tokyo. Finally, they will wrap up their enriching journey on October 21, flying back to the Philippines with treasured experiences and friendships.

Throughout the program, participants will communicate in both English and Japanese, enhancing their language skills while experiencing cultural exchange firsthand. The Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE) oversees this initiative, ensuring a well-structured and impactful journey.
