Celebrating Illinois Voices Through a Unique Initiative
On April 14, 2026, Illinois Humanities kicked off a significant project named
Illinois Voices 250. This statewide initiative aims to record and preserve the diverse narratives of the residents of Illinois as a tribute to the nation's 250th anniversary. This effort is undertaken in collaboration with the Illinois America 250 Commission and StoryCorps Studios, emphasizing the power of storytelling in capturing the essence of our shared history.
The purpose of
Illinois Voices 250 is to create a substantial time capsule that captures the lived experiences of individuals across all 102 counties in Illinois. By documenting the viewpoints and stories surrounding the Declaration of Independence, this initiative ensures that the voices of ordinary Illinoisans are included in the historical narrative of this important milestone.
Gabrielle H. Lyon, Executive Director of Illinois Humanities, highlighted the significance of focusing on individual voices, stating,
"Illinois Humanities believes the most powerful way to mark this moment is to center the voices of the people who live here. Illinois Voices 250 is designed to ensure the experiences of everyday Illinoisans - We the People - are part of the historical record of this moment."
With its extensive network of partners and StoryCorps Studios' oral storytelling expertise,
Illinois Voices 250 is poised to encourage participation from various communities, including urban, suburban, and rural areas. Residents are invited to contribute by either recording their conversations using the accessible guidelines available at
www.il250.org/il-voices or by joining community recording events hosted throughout the state. This dual approach promotes widespread engagement, making it easy for Illinoisans to share their narratives, regardless of their location.
The recorded conversations will not only capture personal history but also become part of a special collection archived at the American Folklife Center within the Library of Congress, ensuring their preservation for future generations. These stories will help to illustrate what Illinois residents consider essential about their country's history and identity.
Robert White, Senior Director of Programs at Illinois Humanities, remarked,
"These conversations give us a chance to talk about what we think is important to know about our country's history, and to imagine where we can go together. Thanks to our collaboration with Story Corps Studios, these stories will be preserved for generations to come."
As Illinois prepares to mark this momentous occasion in 2026, everyone in the state is encouraged to participate in this extraordinary storytelling journey. To learn more about the

This ambitious project is supported in part by the
Paul M. Angell Family Foundation and the
Field Foundation, showcasing a robust commitment to preserving the narratives that shape our communities and cultures. By engaging in this initiative, Illinoisans not only contribute to a vital historical project but also become active participants in the ongoing narrative of their state and nation.
In these times of reflection and commemoration,
Illinois Voices 250 stands out as a beacon of collective memory, emphasizing the beauty of diversity through storytelling and solidifying the importance of shared histories in shaping a united future.
