Celebrating the Artistic Legacy of Hideki Noda
The Tokyo Art Theatre is set to host a remarkable exhibition dedicated to its first Artistic Director,
Hideki Noda, titled "The Poster Exhibition of Hideki Noda, the First Artistic Director of Tokyo Art Theatre." This exhibition will run from
March 24 to March 31, 2026, offering a reflective look at Noda's contributions since he assumed the role in
2009.
Hideki Noda, born in
Nagasaki in
1955, has made an indelible mark on the Japanese performing arts scene as a playwright, director, and actor. He inaugurated the post of Artistic Director at the Tokyo Art Theatre in July
2009, succeeding a string of influential figures. As a respected professor emeritus at
Tama Art University, Noda has continuously pushed the boundaries of theater since the inception of his troupe,
Yume no Yuminsya, during his university days.
Following the dissolution of his theater group in
1992, he pursued further studies in
London and later established
NODA MAP in
1993. The forthcoming exhibition will feature an array of over
30 posters from performances that Noda was instrumental in producing at the theatre, showcasing his journey and evolution within the theater realm.
The exhibition provides audiences with a unique opportunity to visually traverse Noda's artistic journey and witness firsthand the impact he has had on the theatrical landscape. Notable works that will be commemorated include productions such as
KILL,
Pandora's Bell,
Oil, and
The Bee, among many others. His innovative takes on classic operas, such as Mozart's
The Marriage of Figaro and his own kabuki adaptations, continue to challenge and inspire.

Noda's artistic prowess extends beyond Japan’s borders, with performances and collaborations that resonate internationally. His work has been showcased in prestigious venues, including the
National Choreographic Center in France, and he has engaged in international collaborations with theater artists from
the UK,
Thailand, and
South Korea. Most recently, in early
2020, he performed an English version of
One Green Bottle in
Taiwan and
New York.
Noda's contributions have not gone unnoticed. January
2023 saw him recognized with the
Distinguished Artist Award, marking him as the first Japanese recipient of the honor at the
ISPA. His accolades include the
Order of the British Empire (OBE) awarded in
2009, the
Asahi Prize in the same year, and the
Purple Ribbon Medal awarded in
2011.
With the formation of his works and the essence of his performances captured within this exhibition, attendees can expect a historical and cultural expedition that honors one of Japan's most innovative theatre figures. Join us in celebrating the legacy of
Hideki Noda and the vibrant world of theater he has cultivated, reflecting on the artistic achievements that have significantly shaped Japanese performing arts.
