Weller Development Partners Begins Site Clearing at Six Senses Grand Bahama
Weller Development Partners, in collaboration with Pegasus Capital Advisors, has officially started site clearing for the Six Senses Grand Bahama. This marks a pivotal milestone in the journey towards creating a sustainable luxury resort and residences, with an unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement.
As preparations ramp up for the official groundbreaking set for the first quarter of 2025, the team has undertaken essential activities such as the identification and removal of invasive casuarina pine trees, alongside the setup of construction fencing and project signage. Furthermore, the construction of viewing platforms and a temporary boat dock has begun, aimed at facilitating site tours for interested buyers of the Six Senses Residences.
A core aspect of this project is its focus on sustainability. Trees earmarked for removal will not be simply disposed of; instead, they will be processed into landfill material, minimizing transportation needs and reducing carbon emissions from vehicles.
Marc Weller, Founding Partner of Weller Development, reiterated the significance of environmental stewardship in their development approach, stating, "Our approach to development has always been rooted in environmental responsibility. We are striving to uphold and enhance the natural ecosystem of Grand Bahama while establishing a sustainable development model that positively impacts the area."
The Six Senses Grand Bahama aims to achieve LEED Silver certification through a range of sustainability measures, including the use of locally sourced building materials and energy-efficient systems. Noteworthy features include passive shading mechanisms, high-efficiency mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as a strong focus on beach restoration and reinforced dune systems. It also prioritizes hurricane preparedness by raising the Finished Floor Elevation (FFE) significantly and implementing a fortified structural dune system along the seaside coastline to mitigate storm surge impacts. The development team is partnering with various leading environmental organizations to ensure the project positively contributes to local ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity and environmental health.
This significant step forward follows a well-attended community meeting where locals expressed overwhelming support for the project, recognizing the positive impacts it is expected to bring to the island. During the meeting, the development team presented their thorough plans for infrastructure enhancements, sustained environmental conservation, along with an assurance of creating around 400 construction jobs and 200 permanent positions within the hospitality sector.
To ensure safety during construction, Fortune Bay Road leading to the site will be closed. However, the developers emphasize a commitment to working with the community, ensuring residents continue to have convenient pedestrian access to the beach both during and post-construction.
Upon completion, anticipated for the fourth quarter of 2026, Six Senses Grand Bahama will span 50 acres, featuring a comprehensive eco-conscious resort community. This will include 70 guest rooms (comprising 38 villas) and 28 branded residences, all masterfully designed by celebrated architecture firms Gensler and Olson Kundig.
