Exciting Launch: Women’s Drinking Week in Kitakyushu
The city of Kitakyushu is set to embrace a new initiative aimed at promoting its vibrant drinking culture among women. The exciting project, dubbed
Women’s Drinking Week or
女子飲みweek, is organized by movel, a creative agency based in Shibuya, Tokyo, and will kick off on
May 30. This initiative not only showcases local restaurants but also empowers and connects young women in the community.
Project Background
Movel has harnessed the experience of its Social Media Creative Director, a member of the Z Generation, who was deployed to Kitakyushu under Japan’s regional revitalization entrepreneur program last year. This program was initiated to foster promotional support for the city using innovative, youth-driven approaches. A distinctive area that had potential but remained underexplored in terms of promotion was the
women's drinking scene. Often perceived as unwelcoming for female groups, traditional izakayas and bars in the region hold untapped charm that movel aims to reflect and promote through this project.
Aiming to Attract Women Visitors
By video-advertising restaurants where women can feel comfortable and welcomed, movel seeks to eradicate the stigma surrounding women-only drinking gatherings. The goal is to encourage women visiting Kitakyushu for business or pleasure to discover the joy of local drinks, dining, and the unique ambiance of the city's eateries. Movel has collaborated with female staff members from the Z Generation in Kitakyushu to curate a list of 21 recommended locations spread across seven districts of the city, presenting diverse options that cater specifically to a female audience.
