Huawei Hosts the 4th Digital Economy Development Forum
On March 5, 2026, at MWC Barcelona, Huawei organized the 4th Digital Economy Development Forum, bringing together about 100 digital strategy makers and industry experts from various regions, including the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and Africa. This event focused on exploring new opportunities for the development of the digital economy in an age dominated by artificial intelligence.
Opening Remarks by David Wang
David Wang, Huawei's Executive Director of the Board, commenced the event by discussing key themes such as infrastructural policy and talent development, aligning with the forum's theme of transforming vision into value for a smarter future. During his address, Wang highlighted the explosive growth of artificial intelligence worldwide and its emergence as a pivotal player in reshaping the global economic landscape.
According to IDC, AI is projected to contribute $22.3 trillion to the global economy by 2030, signaling a shift in the digital economy paradigm—changing from merely “connection + data” to “AI + decision-making.” This transformation implies a significant restructuring of global value chains and economic dynamics.
The Future of Digital Economy
Wang emphasized three critical areas that need global focus to ensure high-quality development of the digital economy. First, there is a pressing need for suitable industry policies that fully support the digital economy, enabling synergetic growth between digital and real economies. Secondly, future-oriented infrastructure is essential for the development of the digital economy, providing a robust foundation for the widespread application of digital technologies across sectors. Lastly, a multilayered and sustainable talent ecosystem is crucial for the long-term sustainable growth of the digital economy.
Wang concluded his opening remarks by affirming Huawei's commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to enable smart industries and lay a solid foundation for a smarter world. “Let’s turn our vision into value and shape our intelligent future together,” he stated.
Building Future Digital Infrastructure
During the opening session, participants gathered to explore the future construction of digital infrastructure. Joyce Liu, Director of Huawei's ICT Marketing Operations Department, underscored that digital infrastructure is the keystone for industrial development in the AI era. Liu indicated that this infrastructure must advance across all fronts, including networks, energy, and computing power. Such advancements will enable industry players to establish millisecond-level low latency networking efficiently, preventing data silos that could hinder AI development.
Moreover, there is a call for expedited establishment of green data centers to support computational growth while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions. Professor Rong Ke, Director of the Institute of Economics at Tsinghua University, also highlighted data as a fundamental factor of production in the AI age. He pointed out that the full value of data can only be realized through enhanced digital infrastructure that improves its production, transfer, storage, and application processes.
Key Consensus and Collaborative Opportunities
The forum reached a fundamental consensus surrounding key issues pertinent to the development of the digital economy. Countries are currently at various stages of digital economic development and must formulate AI development strategies and application paths tailored to their specific conditions to effectively promote intelligent transformation.
Since its inception in 2023, Huawei's Digital Economy Development Forum has evolved into a high-level communication platform focused on innovation and collaboration for shared global success.
