New Jersey American Water Expands Services with Hopewell Borough Acquisition
New Jersey American Water Completes Acquisition of Hopewell Borough Water System
New Jersey American Water has officially acquired the water system of Hopewell Borough for a total of $6.4 million, marking a significant milestone for both the utility company and the local community. This acquisition, which was approved through a voter referendum in November 2025, brings approximately 930 new water customer connections to the company and solidifies its presence in the region.
This newly acquired system has been purchasing water from New Jersey American Water since 2005, making the transition smoother for the residents. With the Pennsylvania Board of Public Utilities authorization, New Jersey American Water will begin providing water services immediately following the completion of the deal.
The acquisition is not merely a change in ownership; it represents New Jersey American Water's ongoing dedication to delivering high-quality water services to its customers, while also addressing infrastructure needs that are vital for the community's future.
Mark McDonough, the President of New Jersey American Water, expressed pride in officially welcoming Hopewell Borough into the company’s operational footprint, emphasizing the commitment to deliver safe, clean, and reliable water services statewide. His statement highlights a commitment to stability and efficient service. It also underscores the company’s pledge to tackle long-standing infrastructure challenges faced by the Borough.
As a part of this agreement, New Jersey American Water will allocate a notable $7 million for infrastructure improvements within the first five years of ownership. Among the many planned enhancements, the utility will focus on replacing all lead and galvanized steel service lines and upgrading aged fire hydrants, meters, and water mains.
One crucial aspect of the project is the closure of the Borough's operational well, which has been reported to contain elevated levels of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). The residents will receive safer drinking water supplied through the Canal Road and Raritan Millstone Water Treatment Plants that adhere to state and federal safe drinking water standards. This strategic move not only aligns with public health objectives but also demonstrates the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship for over 3 million customers they serve statewide.
Furthermore, McDonough notes that New Jersey American Water takes pride in providing all its customers with an array of benefits. Upon the acquisition's implementation, the residents of Hopewell Borough will gain access to the company's online account management portal, known as MyWater, and the H2O Help to Others program aimed at assisting those struggling to pay their water bills.
In addition to enhancing customer service facets, the utility remains vigilant in its environmental responsibilities and infrastructure development as it continues to grow, making this acquisition the tenth in the past five years, which now adds over 25,000 new water and/or wastewater customers to its portfolio. This strategic expansion aligns with New Jersey American Water's long-term goals to achieve greater operational efficiencies while bolstering community water access.
The community can expect further communication regarding specific benefits and resources from New Jersey American Water in the coming weeks, reassuring residents that they can look forward to improved water service reliability and quality in their borough. As we observe the company’s growth trajectory, it is evident that New Jersey American Water is committed not only to operational excellence but also to sustainable community service that prioritizes public health, safety, and environmental wellness.
