University at Buffalo's Bold Step into Sustainable Transit
In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability, the University at Buffalo (UB) has officially integrated its first electric buses into the campus transportation fleet, marking a significant milestone in their commitment to zero-carbon mobility. This initiative is a part of the university's ambitious 10 in 10 roadmap, aiming for a fully zero-emissions campus by 2030, well ahead of New York State's 2045 deadline set for heavy-duty vehicles.
The unveiling ceremony took place on August 31, 2026, attended by university officials, local dignitaries, and community members, all united in celebration of this eco-friendly advancement. Eight 40-foot battery-electric buses now comprise the UB Stampede Fleet, which caters to approximately 16,000 passengers daily. These buses are designed to provide safe, reliable transit while significantly reducing the environmental footprint of UB's transportation network.
Christopher Austin, the director of parking and transportation at UB, emphasized the dual benefits of this initiative: enhancing the rider experience and mitigating environmental impact. "Our goal is to provide safe, reliable transportation while continuing to reduce our environmental impact," Austin stated. "These buses help us do both, representing another investment in the future of mobility at UB."
The transition to electric buses is expected to have a substantial impact, with projections estimating a reduction of 5,984 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions annually. This reduction equates to a remarkable 55.6% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the previous diesel-powered services. To put this into perspective, such a reduction is likened to removing approximately 1,395 conventional vehicles from the roads.
UB's partnership with WeDriveU, the transportation solutions provider, and Zenobē, a specialist in fleet electrification, has been vital in advancing this project. Tim Wayland, Chief Commercial Officer at WeDriveU, expressed pride in supporting the university's initiative. He noted, "Together with UB, Zenobē and WeDriveU's local operations team, we're showing the impact on campuses and communities by transitioning to zero-emission fleets."
Furthermore, Zenobē's role extends beyond just providing the buses. The company ensures that the fleet operates efficiently through strategic planning and reliable infrastructure to support the electric vehicles. Matt Curwood, Vice President of Business Development at Zenobē North America, highlighted the importance of operational confidence in electric buses, paving the way for future transitions in other institutions.
The groundwork for this project was laid in June 2024 when the university appointed WeDriveU to manage campus transportation systems. As part of the plan, ten charging stations have already been installed at WeDriveU's facility in Buffalo, with further expansion of electric bus ranges anticipated over the coming years.
