Sands China Launches Philip Colbert's 'Lobster' Exhibition in Macao

Sands China recently inaugurated a colorful art exhibition by the celebrated pop artist Philip Colbert, located at the scenic waterfront of the Macao Science Center. This exhibition, titled Coastal Fantasia: The Lobster King's Vacation in Macao, features a tableau of eye-catching installations designed to celebrate the region's maritime culture and beauty.

The showcase will run until mid-March and is set across five prominent sites in Macao, providing a delightful experience for both residents and tourists. Colbert's unique installations, which include his iconic Lobster character, reflect the artist's creativity and aim to enhance Macao’s cultural tourism landscape.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Sands China held its inaugural ceremony featuring esteemed guests, including local government officials and the artist himself. The exhibition not only displays large installations but also an array of over 20 newly commissioned artworks, including paintings and sculptures highlighting the synergy between Colbert's artistic vision and Macao's coastal sensibility.

Dr. Wilfred Wong, executive vice chairman of Sands China, expressed his excitement about collaborating with Colbert, emphasizing the significance of bringing internationally acclaimed art to Macao. He noted the goal of enhancing maritime tourism offerings and enriching the local cultural experience.

Colbert, often hailed as the “godson of Andy Warhol”, has captured global attention with his playful Lobster persona and vibrant, narrative-driven artworks. His installations are a lively fusion of classical art elements and modern-day symbols, igniting conversations around contemporary culture and environmental awareness.

The centerpiece of the exhibition includes a 15-meter high inflatable installation named Lobster Submarine, alongside various themed art sculptures that celebrate Macao's breathtaking coastline. An outstanding 7-meter tall Lobster Flamingo at The Venetian Macao further enchants visitors, showcasing the artist's whimsical style in a breathtaking setting.

Additionally, visitors can explore 'The Journey to the Lobster Planet Macao', Colbert's solo exhibition at the Macao Cultural Center, where viewers can engage with an assortment of vibrant oil paintings and sculptures that exemplify his dynamic artistic practice.

Aiming to enrich community engagement, Sands China also sponsors Philip Colbert’s Macao Art Tour, allowing locals and tourists to enjoy contemporary art through Colbert’s works positioned at historical sites such as the former Iec Long Firecracker Factory and Taipa Houses. This initiative seeks to blend cultural education with entertainment, paving the way for a more profound appreciation of Macao’s artistic heritage.

To increase the festive ambiance as the Lunar New Year approaches, Sands China provides complimentary themed decorations and artistic demonstrations related to Colbert's Lobster character.

The collaboration between Sands China, the Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau, and Philip Colbert represents a vibrant step towards diversifying the cultural offerings of Macao, positioning it as a hub for creativity and international artistry. The reimagined landscape of the city further emphasizes its role as a melting pot of Eastern and Western cultures, richly embodied by Colbert’s masterpieces.
