Chobani and U.S. Soccer: Celebrating the Dreams of Top Players
Chobani, the official nutrition partner of U.S. Soccer, has embarked on a captivating initiative to showcase the incredible journeys of the U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT) players, specifically Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic, and Antonee Robinson. As the team prepares for its global presence, it’s essential to recognize the hard work, sacrifices, and the crucial role of the community that has supported these athletes through their careers.
Three noteworthy artists have been invited to bring the players’ stories to life through various forms of art. This initiative, titled "Feed the Dream," emphasizes the collective effort of the many individuals—parents, coaches, fans, and supporters—who have contributed to the players’ journeys toward stardom. The initiative starts with bespoke shirts designed by the renowned Heron Preston. Each shirt serves as a wearable tribute to the players' lives, crafted from various textiles that resonate with their personal stories. Materials reminiscent of their childhood teams and significant life moments are integrated into the designs, creating a piece that is rich in meaning.
Heron Preston commented on the uniqueness of the project, stating, "I've designed and upcycled shirts before, but I've never designed one that had to carry someone's life in it. Every stitch, every fabric choice, every color holds significance that transcends aesthetics. They’re like hidden treasures waiting to be unearthed by the player, embodying personal stories not immediately apparent to the outside world."
The visual storytelling extends through stunning collages created by acclaimed portrait artist Michael Mapes. These pieces, categorized under “Fed by Many,” consist of deconstructed portraits that utilize “biographical DNA.” They weave together photographs, relevant documents, and other meaningful objects that encapsulate the essence of each player’s journey.
Mapes explains, "My work stems from the concept of DNA, constructing portraits from fragments that shape a person's life. Each collage serves as a narrative that reflects the supporters’ contributions who played integral roles in the players’ lives. As I worked on these pieces, each element evolved into a significant aspect of a more extensive narrative that allows for a deeper understanding of how Christian, Weston, and Antonee navigated their dreams."
These compelling collages will be showcased in Los Angeles through June and reproduced in larger-than-life displays in New York City, alongside the hometowns of McKennie and Pulisic.
In parallel, the initiative also includes a biographical content series titled “Behind the Dream,” directed by BAFTA nominee Hector Dockrill. This series explores the influence of unconditional support from family and friends in shaping the greatness of these athletes. From crucial moments shared with coaches to the unwavering support from family, Dockrill aims to present an authentic portrayal of the sacrifices that go into elevating these players to the pinnacle of the sport.
Dockrill stated, “Having played football for much of my life, my intent was to capture the truth and reality of what families, coaches, and friends endure to help these players reach the top levels of competition. This content will shine a light on the heartfelt moments that define the beauty of soccer.” This engaging series will run as television segments in selected markets during the tournament.
