Peter A. Feldman Takes the Helm as Acting Chairman of CPSC

On January 22, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) welcomed a new leader as Commissioner Peter A. Feldman was appointed Acting Chairman. The announcement comes shortly after his election as Vice Chairman, effective January 13, 2025. Feldman stepped into the top role following the resignation of Alex Hoehn-Saric, who had led the Commission since January 2021.

In his first statement as Acting Chairman, Feldman expressed gratitude for the support of his fellow commissioners and emphasized the importance of ensuring consumer safety. He said, "I am excited to take on this new role at the Commission, and I am grateful for the support of my fellow Commissioners. American families should have confidence that CPSC is hard at work for them. Those who violate the law or import dangerous goods from abroad should be on notice this Commission is focused and resolved to enforce our statutes."

Peter A. Feldman has been a member of the CPSC since October 5, 2018. Nominated by President Donald J. Trump, he was confirmed by the Senate to complete a term that was set to expire in 2019. His commitment to public safety was further solidified with a re-nomination that extended his term to October 2026. Throughout his tenure, Feldman has been a vocal advocate against the influx of consumer goods from China that do not comply with U.S. federal laws. He has worked tirelessly to enhance the agency's effectiveness in addressing the challenges posed by modern consumer markets.

Before joining the CPSC, Feldman made significant contributions as Senior Counsel to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. In this role, he served as a key adviser to Committee Chairman, Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), where he was pivotal in drafting bipartisan legislation. His experience also includes being a staff member for former U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine (R-OH), where he played a direct role in the development of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA). This landmark legislation aims to establish regulations that safeguard young children while using swimming pools and spas, aligning closely with one of the CPSC's main initiatives: the Pool Safely Campaign.

Academically, Feldman holds a Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University, graduating cum laude, and obtained his Juris Doctor, also cum laude, from American University's Washington College of Law. He is a proud member of the Maryland Bar and continues to contribute to public safety and consumer protection from this influential position.

The CPSC's mission is to protect the public from unreasonable risks associated with thousands of consumer products. Alarmingly, deaths, injuries, and property damage linked to defective consumer products result in costs exceeding $1 trillion each year in the U.S. The agency's efforts have been credited with a significant reduction in injury rates over the past fifty years.

As Feldman assumes the Chair, he faces a challenging landscape where pressing issues, including product recalls and compliance enforcement, remain at the forefront of consumer safety. "Our work is far from over," he stated, signaling his commitment to improving the safety landscape for American consumers. Restricted by federal law from selling products that are either recalled by the Commission or voluntarily recalled in consultation with the CPSC, the stakes are high for both consumers and manufacturers.

For updates on safety practices and product recalls, the public is encouraged to visit CPSC's official website at www.cpsc.gov. The agency provides a reliable source for consumers to keep abreast of potential dangers and safety tips. Furthermore, individuals can subscribe to email alerts, follow CPSC on social media, and report unsafe products through designated platforms to ensure collective vigilance in consumer safety.
