Discover Tadanori Yokoo's Art in Album Covers at Daikanyama Tsutaya

Tadanori Yokoo's Album Cover Art Exhibition

Daikanyama Tsutaya, located in Shibuya, Tokyo, is set to host a remarkable exhibition titled "The World of Tadanori Yokoo's Album Covers - An Encounter with Art Pieces." This event, in collaboration with FTF Corporation, will take place from September 15 (Monday) to September 30 (Tuesday), 2025. It showcases a curated selection of vinyl record designs created by the renowned contemporary artist Tadanori Yokoo, known for his unique integration of artistry in music packaging.

During this exhibition, visitors can explore the captivating allure of record art and the historical context that Yokoo’s works encapsulate. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Yokoo’s iconic “Y Crossroad” series, and attendees will have the opportunity to purchase the latest publications and related merchandise celebrating this milestone. This includes the special release of the monumental A2-sized compendium, "TADANORI YOKOO Masterworks 1960s-70s," which provides a deep dive into his artistic universe.

Yokoo’s album cover art transcends mere music packaging; it embodies the vibrant energy and ethos of its time. The collection features over 100 pieces, showcasing Yokoo's evolution in style—from the pop-psychedelic graphics of the 1960s, through the spiritual and symbolic collages of the 1970s, to the painterly expressions of the 1980s onward. Each piece serves as a testament to the socio-cultural climate of its era, offering a unique visual experience that resonates beyond just sound.

The exhibition strives to be a cultural hub for adults, blending music and art in an organic fusion. Yokoo's album covers exemplify the intersection of two diverse cultural domains, and through this initiative, the organizers hope to rekindle appreciation for the artistic elements hidden within the familiar format of album covers. They seek to impart a fresh perspective on the beauty found in everyday life, through the lens of accessible art.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a talk session themed "The Charm of Tadanori Yokoo and Album Art" will take place on September 18 (Thursday) from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Esteemed guests including Hideshi Asami (Chief Editor, Tuvargins), Keita Matsubusa (Sales Manager, Fujiwara Printing Co.), and Shinichi Takei (Chairman, FTF Corporation) will share insights into Yokoo's significant impact on the art and music scenes.

Admission to the talk is free, with no prior reservation required; visitors are encouraged to simply arrive at the venue. However, be aware that entry may be limited due to crowd control measures.

Music possesses an extraordinary ability to mirror cultural narratives, societal dynamics, and the essence of each era, forming a deep connection with our fundamental human experience. Often, our initial engagement with music starts from simple instincts—like being drawn to an attractive album cover or feeling compelled by a certain genre. This exhibition aims to use those intuitive sparks as a gateway for attendees to discover new musical landscapes, encouraging everyone to embrace the world of music through a blend of visuals and sensory experiences.
