Dr. Vivek Murthy to Address Loneliness at End Well 2026 Summit

The upcoming End Well 2026 Summit is set to feature former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, who is known for his focus on public health issues. The event, scheduled for November 12 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles and online, aims to tackle the pressing issue of loneliness, particularly in the context of facing serious illness, caregiving, and grief. In a conversation with CBS News correspondent Jamie Yuccas, Murthy will delve into critical discussions on human connection and the evolving role of technology, including AI, in supporting individuals during times of crisis.

Founded in 2017, End Well is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reshaping the dialogue around end-of-life issues. The 2026 Summit comes at a pivotal moment as the U.S. approaches a demographic turning point where the number of annual deaths is expected to exceed births by 2030, according to projections by the Congressional Budget Office. This year's theme, "When Does Now Begin?" invites participants from diverse backgrounds to explore the significance of making meaningful choices long before a crisis arises.

The event is poised to draw hundreds of in-person attendees and engage thousands more via live streaming. Actress Yvette Nicole Brown, recognized for her advocacy in caregiving, will host the event. The lineup includes distinguished speakers such as Dr. Lucy Kalanithi, who will share insights alongside patient Jessie Creel, as well as Dr. Warris Bokhari, co-founder of Claimable, focusing on navigating the healthcare system. Additional voices leading the dialogue include palliative care expert Dr. BJ Miller, author Hope Edelman, and physician Dr. Rana Awdish.

Participants can look forward to various workshops aimed at enriching conversations around end-of-life experiences. Notably, a session led by members of the LA Improv Comics will integrate humor into discussions regarding death, showcasing a creative approach to an often-taboo subject.

Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider, the founder of End Well, remarked on the evolution of the conversation about death. “Almost a decade ago, addressing this topic seemed nearly impossible,” she said. “Today, it has permeated living rooms and hospitals, reflecting a significant cultural shift.”

Murthy, whose 2023 advisory highlighted loneliness as a major public health concern, emphasized that nearly half of American adults experience feelings of isolation. He compared the risks associated with loneliness to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, underlining the urgent need for community connection.

In his upcoming talk, Dr. Murthy will explore the essential nature of companionship during challenging times. He plans to discuss the role of AI companions and chatbots in supporting those grappling with illness and grief, as well as the resources that families and communities need to effectively support one another.

Reflecting on the significance of the theme, Murthy stated, “Loneliness is a signal, just like hunger or thirst, that tells us we are missing something vital for our health.” His commitment to fostering better ways to care for each other through the trials of illness and grief resonates with the summit's mission to address these often overlooked issues.

Tracy Wheeler, Executive Director of End Well, expressed that the program was designed to elevate voices of those directly affected by end-of-life decisions, including patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. “These individuals possess invaluable insights on how to remain present amid uncertainty and derive meaning from loss,” she stated. Such discussions are not just reserved for moments of crisis; they are essential skills for navigating life.

The End Well 2026 Summit will be accessible online, offering worldwide free streaming. In-person tickets and virtual registration options are available, with continuing education credits planned for qualified healthcare professionals pending approval. This year’s summit will also lay the groundwork for End Well's 10th anniversary celebration in 2027.
