In a bold move for Ukrainian chess, Timur Turlov has set the stage for significant changes in the upcoming FIDE presidential elections. Turlov, who is running for FIDE President alongside world-renowned five-time champion Viswanathan Anand, is advocating for Ukraine to not only be included in the decision-making of the global chess community but to also nominate its own candidate for the position of Vice President within FIDE.

A passionate advocate for Ukrainian chess, Turlov emphasizes that Ukraine has long been a stronghold of chess talent, producing generations of esteemed players and coaches. In a recent post on social media platform X, he stated, "Ukraine is one of the world's great chess nations," underscoring the need for the country to have a meaningful voice in FIDE's leadership. He argues that the organization must not function in isolation from global realities, implying that Ukraine's historical contributions to chess should reflect in its governance and representation.

Recognizing the importance of support from influential figures within the country, Turlov extended an invitation to Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Ukrainian President, to consider a leadership role within FIDE. Podolyak has openly expressed his support for Turlov’s vision for reform, indicating readiness to join his new team should Turlov secure the presidency. Turlov's experience as President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation since 2023 and the International School Chess Federation since 2025 adds weight to his campaign. Under his leadership, Kazakhstan has advanced its chess education initiatives, reaching over 1,500 schools and training approximately 60,000 students. This robust educational framework has not only bolstered chess participation in Kazakhstan but has also hosted notable international events, including the 2023 World Championship Match.

FIDE, in recent collaborations with Turlov’s Nasdaq-listed finance firm, Freedom Holding Corp., has been implementing chess development programs set to launch in 2026. These initiatives are designed to enhance tournament organization, player coaching, educational resources, and overall talent development.

The FIDE presidential election is scheduled for September 26, 2026, during the General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where three presidential teams will compete for leadership: Turlov-Anand, Wadim Rosenstein-Gordon Tang, and Jan Henric Buettner-Malcolm Pein. Each member federation will exercise one vote, marking a pivotal moment for the future direction of global chess.
