JPI Seminar on Solar Power Expansion in Water Infrastructure for Decarbonization Efforts

JPI Seminar: Expanding Solar Power in Water Infrastructure for Decarbonization

On July 10, 2025, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will host a seminar featuring Yosuke Kaneko, Deputy Director of the Global Warming Policy Division at the Ministry of Environment. This event will focus on the significant role of solar power in enhancing energy efficiency and achieving decarbonization in water facilities, particularly water supply and sewage systems.

Importance of Solar Power in Water Infrastructure

Water infrastructure is one of the highest electricity-consuming sectors. To transition to carbon neutrality, it is critical to implement comprehensive energy-saving measures alongside a mass introduction of renewable energy sources. The adoption of solar energy, especially through public-private partnerships (PPAs), has been gaining momentum. This seminar will provide detailed insights on how these methods can propel efforts toward decarbonizing water supply and sewage facilities.

With the increasing integration of solar power into society, it becomes essential to develop more efficient operational management strategies for water facilities. The seminar aims to outline the Ministry of Environment's support policies, future initiatives, and how they relate to solar adoption in water services.

Agenda Overview

The seminar includes several key topics:
1. Government Plans for Carbon Neutrality in Water Business: Discussing current strategies and objectives set by the government.
2. Patterns of Solar Power Adoption: Various methods of integrating solar technology into existing infrastructure.
3. Subsidy Systems Related to Solar Power: Exploring financial support available for implementing solar solutions.
4. Future Prospects for Solar Adoption in Water Services: Anticipating advancements and trends.
5. Additional Decarbonization Initiatives: Examples include small hydropower in water services and demand response strategies.
6. Q&A Session: Opening the floor to participant inquiries.
7. Networking Opportunities: Participants can exchange business cards and foster professional relationships, which can be instrumental for business expansion.
