New Guidance for Building Sustainable Automotive Facilities Released by Suppliers Partnership for the Environment

New Building Recommendations to Boost Sustainability

On July 8, 2025, the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP), a coalition of leading global automotive manufacturers and suppliers, unveiled its latest guidance document, "Advancing Sustainability in the Built Environment: New Building Recommendations for Suppliers." This influential resource aims to enhance sustainability throughout the design, construction, and operation phases of new manufacturing facilities within the automotive supply sector.

As the automotive industry works diligently toward a more sustainable future, the impact of the built environment represents a significant opportunity for innovation and operational improvement. The SP's new guidance encourages suppliers to integrate sustainability principles early in their planning stages, leverage life cycle thinking, and adopt strategies to minimize environmental footprints. This approach also promotes the health and well-being of facility occupants.

Kellen Mahoney, the Executive Director of SP, emphasized the monumental potential suppliers hold in shaping a sustainable future. He noted, "As automotive production footprints evolve and expand, it is essential for suppliers to integrate environmental choices into the design and construction of new facilities. This document provides practical insights and recommended practices to assist companies in achieving high-performing, sustainable buildings that align with the automotive industry's environmental objectives."

Developed through a collaborative effort led by SP's vehicle manufacturer members, the document outlines best practices and key focus areas, including energy and water efficiency, air and water quality, biodiversity, circular thinking, material selection, and indoor environmental quality. Crucially, the guidance underscores the importance of stakeholder engagement, early-stage planning, and compliance with top green building certification standards.

SP extends gratitude to Ford Motor Company for pioneering this initiative among its members and acknowledges the valuable contributions from Toyota Motor North America and General Motors in shaping the guidance document.

The New Building Recommendations for Suppliers is designed to be an easily accessible resource for companies at varying stages in their sustainability journey. It complements SP's overarching mission to enhance environmental performance across the entire supply chain.
