Major Winners Announced in the 23rd Annual Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Contest

On April 15, 2026, Winning Writers proudly announced the results of its prestigious 23rd annual Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Contest, showcasing remarkable poetic talent from around the globe. Judged by the renowned Michal 'MJ' Jones, with assistance from Briana Grogan and Dare Williams, this contest has garnered significant attention, receiving a staggering 2,471 entries.

Celebrating the Winners

Emily Davis-Fletcher from Roanoke, Virginia, has earned the coveted Tom Howard Prize of $3,500 for her poignant poem, "Sonogram Vision." This poem masterfully captures a mother’s complex emotions as she grapples with the prospect of new life while mourning the innocent lives lost in war. Jones praised the poem's thoughtful use of language, stating, "This poet chooses wording very thoughtfully—knowing that arms can destroy, that arms can hold, that arms 'grow out of heart cells'." The depth of human experience expressed in Davis-Fletcher's piece illustrates a profound connection between personal grief and global tragedy.

In another standout performance, Qiaorui (Sherry) Zhang of Newton, Massachusetts, took home the Margaret Reid Prize—also worth $3,500—for her rhymed poem titled "Tiger Mom." Jones described this narrative as "dazzling, haunting, and deeply affecting," noting how it explores themes of identity through rich rituals of transformation. Zhang’s work provokes contemplation on what remains of ourselves as we navigate life's transitions, emphasizing the intricacies of belonging and self-discovery.

Both winners not only gain financial rewards but have also been granted a two-year gift certificate from co-sponsor Duotrope, providing access to a wealth of literary resources valued at $100.

Acknowledging Honorable Mentions

Additionally, eleven poets were recognized as Honorable Mentions, each receiving $500. The list includes: Alishya Almeida, Ja'net Danielo, Jomil Ebro, Simon Peter Eggertsen, Latorial Faison, Carlos Andrés Gómez (awarded twice), Mickie Kennedy, Elisabeth Preston-Hsu, Maya Salameh, and Margo Wheaton. Their commendable works showcase the diverse range of voices and styles found in contemporary poetry.
