A Unique Approach to Mutual Aid in Disaster Preparedness
Okumura Printing Co., Ltd., based in Kita-ku, Tokyo, will actively participate in the Comprehensive Disaster Drill held in Nishitokyo City on October 26, 2025. This event is set to take place at the Nishitokyo Citizens' Plaza, and will involve the company providing 300 servings of their signature origami tableware, 'beak', aimed at promoting practical learning of mutual support in crisis situations.
Having received tremendous positive feedback from the previous participation in January, Okumura Printing has committed to continuing their support of this important training program. Attendees will have the opportunity to assemble the 'beak' tableware themselves, thereby engaging in a hands-on experience that serves as a valuable lesson in the significance of cooperation during disasters.
Continuing the Legacy of Learning
Okumura Printing made their debut in the disaster training program in January, where they supported a hands-on food distribution training using 'beak'. The event was exceptionally well-received, with all 300 servings being distributed rapidly. Numerous comments from citizens highlighted that they felt the training made disaster preparedness relatable and enjoyable, emphasizing the practical skills they gained for real-life emergencies. This positive response has led to an official request from Nishitokyo City for Okumura Printing to take part once again this year.
Understanding 'beak' Tableware
The 'beak' is an innovative paper tableware designed to be easily assembled from a single sheet, inspired by origami principles. When stored, it occupies minimal space, fitting a compact A4 size format that supports excellent space-saving. It is resistant to water and oil, making it suitable for serving hot meals, and after use, it can be easily disposed of as combustible waste, without occupying excessive space.
This makes the 'beak' especially practical for disaster shelters and food distribution sites where washing dishes can be challenging. Moreover, its versatility extends to outdoor activities and events during normal times, contributing to its phase-free design.
Recognized for Functionality and Social Impact
The design and practicality of 'beak' have garnered multiple awards both domestically and internationally, in recognition of its innovation and impactful contribution to social issues. Some of the notable accolades include:
- - 48th Invention Award: Contribution Award
- - IPA2024 Global Sustainability Category: First Place
- - Asian Packaging Excellence Award (APEA) Sustainable Packaging Category: Gold Award
- - Asian Print Awards (APA): Gold Award in New Technology
