Launch of the Shibuya Matsutō Wall Gallery
An exciting new cultural initiative, the "Shibuya Matsutō Wall Gallery", has been launched as part of the Shibuya Upper West Project. This innovative project, a collaboration between Tokyu Corporation, LCatterton Real Estate, and Tokyu Department Store, showcases art installations on the construction site of the former Tokyu Department Store, aiming to weave the rich cultural tapestry of the Shibuya Upper West Area into the future.
Project Overview
The gallery's theme revolves around the memories associated with the former department store and the ongoing redevelopment that intersects different timelines of the area. This unique blend of past and future aims to depict the diverse experiences of both longtime residents and first-time visitors to Shibuya. Through this prologue, the temporary gallery aspires to remain a lasting testament to an evolving culture and history.
The first phase, commencing on July 1, 2026, features the internationally acclaimed photographer Rinko Kawauchi, who has been tasked with capturing the essence of the surrounding area through her lens. Her delicate portrayal of people and the shifting streets under the twilight adds a unique ambiance, inviting passersby to pause and appreciate the area's serene beauty.
In conjunction with the gallery, an exhibition titled "The Miraculous Gaze: The Adventures of Japanese Women Photographers" will take place at Hikarie Hall in Shibuya from July 4, 2026. This collaboration reflects Shibuya's vibrant artistic community and extends the opportunity to enjoy photography from various angles throughout the city.
Cultural Impact
The Shibuya Matsutō Wall Gallery aims to transform a construction site into a vibrant cultural hub. By leveraging the barriers surrounding the construction, the project aspires to create a cultural symbol for the entire Shibuya area. Collaborative efforts from Bunkamura and the Shibuya Matsutō Museum, alongside assistance from Shibuya Ward, underline a collective commitment to enriching the cultural landscape within this cosmopolitan district.
About the Artists and Partners
Rinko Kawauchi -- Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1972, Kawauchi is recognized for her profound exploration of life's dichotomies, such as life and death, light and shadow. Her works have received international acclaim, garnering numerous awards, including the 2023 Sony World Photography Award's Special Contribution Award, marking her as the first Japanese recipient. Additionally, Kawauchi's work emphasizes moments of beauty in everyday life, making her the ideal artist for this project.
The collaboration with Bunkamura, a premier cultural facility that has been a cornerstone of art and culture in Japan since 1989, further enhances this initiative. Bunkamura functions as a platform for diverse cultural experiences and has played a crucial role in promoting artistic encounters.
The Shibuya Upper West Area itself, with its rich history dating back to the early Meiji era, continues to evolve as a cultural enclave marked by its robust historical context and modern artistic expressions. It serves as a testament to the seamless integration of culture and community in one of Tokyo's most dynamic districts.
Vision and Future Aspirations
From July 1, 2026, to September 30, 2027, the Shibuya Matsutō Wall Gallery will operate as a temporary yet impactful cultural venue. The objective is not only to celebrate the area’s artistic legacy but also to inspire a fresh narrative that embodies Shibuya's transformation into a beacon of culture as the city evolves.
