Advancements in Connected Mobility Technologies for Safer Roads in India
The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) recently held a pivotal conference in New Delhi, spotlighting innovative connected mobility technologies designed to enhance road safety and address the burgeoning mobility demands in India. As one of the largest nations with a diverse network of roads, India grapples with significant challenges in improving road safety while also accommodating a rapidly growing number of vehicles.
The event, aptly titled "Connecting India for Safer Roads: Advancing Mobility for All," gathered key stakeholders including policymakers, vehicle manufacturers, telecom operators, and technology providers. Their collective aim was to demonstrate the potential of Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technologies, which facilitate real-time communication between vehicles and their environment. This technological advancement is envisioned to prevent accidents and bolster traffic efficiency through better data exchange among all road users.
During this critical conference, the Indian government has made strides toward mandating Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication across various vehicle categories, encompassing trucks, vans, passenger cars, motorcycles, and mopeds. These discussions were not merely theoretical; they engaged directly with Indian authorities to address the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and provide insights on V2X spectrum allocation and comments regarding the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' (MoRTH) V2V notification.
The 5GAA advocated for the allocation of the 5.9 GHz band for C-V2X, emphasizing the necessity for license-exempt deployment models, globally harmonized standards, and interoperability for C-V2X solutions. Further, the 5GAA proposed a phased implementation approach, aligning it with the finalization of the recently developed AIS-230 standard. This standardization is crucial as the regulatory advancements are interconnected with the ongoing evolution of AIS-230, which addresses significant elements including certification, testing, interoperability, security frameworks, and key applications.
Christoph Voigt, the Chairman of 5GAA, underscored India's potential in the global connected mobility market, stating, "India is emerging as one of the most exciting markets for connected mobility. As the country advances, today's demonstrations highlighted how 5GAA members are delivering practical solutions that can support safer, smarter, and more connected mobility in India."
Attendees witnessed impressive technology demonstrations featuring 5GAA members such as Anritsu, Bosch, HARMAN, Keysight Technologies, Nokia, Qualcomm, Rohde Schwarz, Rolling Wireless, Tata Motors, and Valeo. These demonstrations illustrated how connected vehicles could share up-to-the-minute information concerning road hazards, traffic conditions, and the presence of vulnerable road users. These capabilities not only support advanced driver assistance systems but also lay the groundwork for software-defined vehicles and next-generation connectivity services.
The showcased technologies provided a tangible representation of the industry's readiness to conform to the incoming India V2V mandate expected to come into full effect by October 2028. The conference reiterated the importance of ongoing collaboration between government entities and industry members, emphasizing the necessity to expedite large-scale deployment so that society can fully benefit from the advancements in connected mobility.
This event serves as a testament to India’s commitment to enhancing road safety and servicing the mobility needs of its diverse populace. As the nation stands on the brink of a mobility revolution, initiatives like those demonstrated at the 5GAA conference will play a pivotal role in shaping the future landscape of transportation in India.
