5GAA Highlights Innovations for Enhancing Road Safety and Mobility in India

New Directions in Mobility

The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) has embarked on an ambitious mission to revolutionize India's road safety and mobility landscape. During a recent conference in New Delhi titled "Connecting India for Safer Roads Advancing Mobility for All," the association gathered a diverse group of stakeholders including policymakers, vehicle manufacturers, telecom companies, and technology providers. This gathering represented a pivotal moment for India's mobility sector, where two pressing challenges were confronted: enhancing road safety and addressing escalating mobility demands in one of the world's largest and most diverse road networks.

The Role of C-V2X Technologies

Central to this initiative are C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) technologies, which enable vehicles to communicate with each other and with infrastructure in real time. This capability is essential for preventing accidents and optimizing traffic flow, effectively transforming how vehicles operate on Indian roads. With the Indian government making significant strides toward regulatory changes, including the introduction of mandatory vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications for various types of vehicles, the timing of the conference could not be more crucial.

Engaging with Government and Industry

5GAA’s engagement with the Indian authorities was particularly noteworthy, with the association responding to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regarding V2X spectrum allocation. Advocating for the allocation of the 5.9 GHz band for C-V2X and license-exempt deployment models was a key focus. The association also pushed for globally synchronized standards to ensure effective interoperability in C-V2X systems. These developments are intrinsically tied to the ongoing formulation of the AIS-230 standard, which has implications for certification, testing, security frameworks, and prioritizing the most beneficial uses of this technology.

A Bright Future for Connected Mobility

As Christoph Voigt, Chairman of 5GAA, remarked, "India is emerging as one of the most exciting markets for connected mobility." The technology demonstrations presented by 5GAA members—such as Anritsu, Bosch, HARMAN, Keysight Technologies, Nokia, Qualcomm, Rohde & Schwarz, Rolling Wireless, Tata Motors, and Valeo—witnessed vehicles exchanging critical information about road hazards, traffic conditions, and even the presence of vulnerable road users. These communications bolster advanced driver assistance systems and support software-defined vehicles and next-gen connectivity services.

Moving Towards the Future

These demonstrations underscore the industry's readiness to comply with the impending India V2V mandate, set to fully roll out by October 2028. The event also reinforced the necessity for a collaborative, cohesive approach between government entities and industry players to expedite the large-scale implementation of these technologies. Through such partnerships, the full societal advantages of connected mobility can be harnessed, paving the way for safer and more efficient transportation systems in India. Future discussions and further advancements in this space will be key to addressing ongoing challenges, ensuring a more secure and reliable road environment for all.

In conclusion, 5GAA's commitment to advancing connected mobility in India is creating a solid foundation for enhanced road safety and improved transport systems. As technology continues to evolve, the collaboration between stakeholders will be crucial in fostering an ecosystem that greatly benefits all road users in India.
