Fostering Peace: High School Students Reflect on War Education Workshop

Peace Education Workshop for High School Students

On July 30, 2023, a significant workshop titled "Sukapā! 80th War Education Workshop" was held for 24 second-year high school students at Shibaura Institute of Technology Kashiwano High School, Tokyo. This initiative marks the 80th anniversary of post-war Japan, aiming to encourage students to engage with the concept of peace and reflect on the memories of war.

The primary goal of this workshop was to foster a deeper understanding of peace not just through mere information-sharing, but through interactive learning that nurtures critical and expressive thinking. Sukapā! JSAT Corporation, the organization behind this initiative, sought to transcend traditional education by creating real-life dialogues around war and peace, linking this theme with their rich programming that includes numerous documentaries.

Students began by watching an original documentary titled "War of Nameless People" from the History Channel, which provided background material for discussions. They then divided into six groups of four, choosing themes related to war and peace to explore. Each group carefully deliberated on their chosen topics, focusing on how to convey war memories to future generations, especially the next cohort of students and children.

Student Discussions and Reflections

During the discussions, students expressed thoughts that resonated with their own lives, offering insights based on their learning experiences. They candidly reflected on the importance of discerning information in today’s world. One student exclaimed, "This workshop has really reinforced the significance of choosing the information we consume."

At the culmination of their discussions, each group crafted a message for the future, which they documented on large sheets of paper. In a presentation session, groups shared their findings and reflections. Participants from other groups provided feedback, saying, “That perspective was unexpected,” signaling a fruitful exchange of ideas and a collaborative learning atmosphere.

The workshop further included insights from the content creators of the documentaries, who engaged with the students. Two representatives from the History Channel expressed their admiration for the high-level discussions: “War is not easily stopped once it starts; preventing conflict in the first place is crucial.” This statement encapsulated the essence of the workshop—empowering the students with knowledge and urging them to think critically about the consequences of war.

A Message to the Future

The messages created during this workshop will be preserved in a time capsule to be buried at the school, aimed at reaching students 20 years in the future, as well as at the 100th anniversary of the war's end in 2025. This initiative underlines the importance of sustaining the peace conversation across generations, ensuring that the lessons learned from past conflicts are not forgotten.

Special Initiatives and Upcoming Programming

In line with the spirit of the workshop, Sukapā! plans to roll out a special programming block that addresses the narratives around post-war education, including documentaries and various related content such as dramas and animation. Noteworthy programs include airing of the animated films "Barefoot Gen" and a documentary journey hosted by Yoko Uchida, exploring the themes of war and dialogue.

Through such efforts, Sukapā! strives to ensure that the legacy of peace, resilience, and historical reflection is alive in the hearts of the youth today. For more information about these initiatives and to access programming, visit Sukapā!.
