Ilia Smirnov Achieves New Solo Speed Record on Mississippi River

Ilia Smirnov Sets New Record on the Mississippi River

In an extraordinary feat of endurance, paddler Ilia Smirnov has established a new solo speed record for the Mississippi River by completing an incredible source-to-sea journey. His record-breaking adventure began on May 1, 2026, at Lake Itasca in Minnesota and ended 2,300 miles later in Louisiana at Mile Zero in the Gulf of Mexico. Smirnov's unofficial finishing time stands at 33 days, 14 hours, and 47 minutes, which surpasses the previous solo record by Traci Lynn Martin by an impressive three weeks.

The Mississippi River is notorious for its challenging and often perilous conditions, making it one of the toughest endurance routes worldwide. During his journey, Smirnov paddled between 14 to 15 hours daily, while only managing to rest for four to five hours each night. He faced numerous hazards, including strong currents, cold-water exposure, complex lock-and-dam systems, technical shipping lanes crowded with commercial traffic, unpredictable weather, and even primitive campouts for a total of 37 nights. As he reflected on his experience, Smirnov stated, "This adventure tested my mental depth and resilience. I had to remain focused mentally, physically, and emotionally while accepting the brutal reality of the journey without any perceived end."

Preparation for such an ambitious expedition is no small feat. Smirnov dedicated a full year to physical training, as well as years of developing mental endurance and emotional resilience. His preparation also required an intense focus on maintaining a balanced diet that sustained a 5,000-calorie daily intake. In addition, he honed his skills with technical and survival training, extensive backcountry experience, and meticulous logistical planning. Although the undertaking was solitary in nature, Smirnov did not lack support; he was backed by a dedicated crew led by Anna Morgan, with contributions from Alyce Morgan, Megan Smirnov, and Judson Steinback. The paddling community, family, and friends also played key roles in supporting his record-setting journey.

Smirnov, currently based in North Carolina, is not only known for his physical endeavors but also for his commitment to environmental stewardship and raising awareness about waterway protection. He immigrated to Boone, NC, from Russia at the age of 16 and now calls Lillington home, where he operates Cape Fear River Adventures. This journey on the Mississippi is just another chapter in his portfolio of long-distance river expeditions, each designed to blend technical acuity with a focus on both personal endurance and protecting natural resources.
