Shanghai International Film Festival Sets New Records with Premieres and Celebrations

The 27th Shanghai International Film Festival: Celebrating Cinematic Excellence

The Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) kicked off its 27th edition on June 13, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the global film industry. This year’s festival is not just another event in the cinematic calendar; it promises an unprecedented experience with a historic record of film submissions and premier screenings.

An Unmatched Record of Participation

This year, SIFF received an astonishing 3,900 submissions from 119 countries and regions, the highest number recorded in its history. Out of these, over 2,800 films are competing for the coveted Golden Goblet Awards, which includes five prestigious categories. Among the highlights, the festival will feature more than 1,820 world premieres and over 520 international premieres, making the combined premiere rate soar to over 80%, which is a nonpareil achievement for any film festival.

A Dynamic Jury with a Fresh Perspective

The Golden Goblet jury, led by the acclaimed Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore, consists of 21 members from diverse locations. Notably, this year’s jury includes younger creatives, particularly in the Asian New Talent category, with an average age of just 35 years. This infusion of youthful perspectives is anticipated to bring innovative insights to the selection process, enhancing the festival's vibrant atmosphere.

Screening Extravaganza and Industry Discussion

Film enthusiasts can look forward to over 400 films being screened across approximately 1,500 sessions. The sessions will feature around 100 in-person Q&A events with filmmakers, allowing for an engaging dialogue between creators and audiences. The festival prides itself on offering a diverse array of genres and narratives, in line with its commitment to artistic excellence and audience participation.

In addition to the film showcases, SIFF will host industry-focused activities such as the SIFFORUM, SIFF Masterclass, and the International Film & TV Market. These events will facilitate high-level discussions, trend analysis, and foster international collaboration among cinema professionals.

Supporting Future Creatives

A special emphasis is put on nurturing emerging talents with this year's SIFF ING, which focuses on two avant-garde creative tracks: AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content) and vertical video formats. These initiatives are designed to scout, promote, and mentor the next generation of filmmakers with related events slated for June 20-21.

Special Theme Weeks Exploring New Horizons

SIFF will feature special events such as the Belt and Road Film Week, Sci-Fi Film Week, and SIFF XR, focusing on new technologies and cross-industry synergies. These thematic weeks aim to delve deeper into unexplored sectors of cinema, offering fresh viewpoints and broadening the scope of global film discourse.

Celebrating Excellence

The high point of the festival will culminate at the Golden Goblet Award Ceremony, scheduled for June 21 at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. This prestigious event will celebrate outstanding artistic achievements from filmmakers worldwide, reinforcing SIFF’s status as a leading light in the international film landscape.
