The Long-Handed Uncle Project: A New Era for Youth in Care
In February 2026, the Long-Handed Uncle Project took an important step forward by registering as a nonprofit organization (NPO). Established to support children and young adults living in social care settings, such as orphanages and foster families, this initiative, led by Director Kisako Omi, aims to provide opportunities for personal development and meaningful encounters.
Founding Vision: Addressing Hidden Challenges
Originating in response to the East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the Long-Handed Uncle Project first focused on delivering handmade utensils and clothing directly to affected children. Over the years, it has evolved to recognize the critical need for experiences and relationships, which cannot be provided solely through material assistance. Many children in social care face unseen obstacles that hinder their ability to visualize a future for themselves as they transition into adulthood.
These young individuals often leave care around the age of 18, facing decisions that can drastically shape their future, such as further education or employment. However, without a strong support network in place, they find it challenging to navigate the complexities of adult life, leading to isolation and self-reliance in dealing with difficulties.
Structured Initiatives: Five Key Programs
To combat these issues, the Long-Handed Uncle Project introduces five core initiatives:
1.
Utensils and Clothing Distribution Event (Annually)
- Aimed at young adults transitioning out of care, this event allows them to select essential items thoughtfully.
2.
Self-Discovery Classroom (Launching September 2026)
- A six-month program encouraging participants to explore diverse lifestyles and gain dialogue experiences that foster self-awareness and future planning.
3.
Connection Tea Meetings (Starting April 2026)
- Monthly informal gatherings where young individuals can share experiences and challenges in a safe, friendly environment.
4.
Future Discovery Program (Scheduled for 2027)
- A program designed for participants to visit workplaces to explore various career paths that align with their personal interests.
5.
Research Initiatives
- Activities centered on gathering feedback from children and young adults to inform ongoing support strategies.
The Self-Discovery Classroom will explore life scenarios and engage students through workshops with experts from multiple fields, highlighting art, expression, philosophy, and nature. Building on the immersive educational model found in Nordic folk high schools, it will emphasize a non-competitive learning environment focused on personal growth.
Impact and Achievements
The project has already made significant strides, delivering handmade items to approximately 400 children and young adults in care within the past few years. By facilitating direct support and ensuring youth have opportunities for enriching experiences, the Long-Handed Uncle Project is dedicated to breaking the cycle of isolation.
In response to growing interest from the community, the project encourages donations through its new supporter program, known as 'Tenaga Supporters.' Contributions can enhance the sustainability of its initiatives.
Join Us: Supporting Future Generations
This initiative highlights the importance of collective effort in uplifting society’s most vulnerable members. As the Long-Handed Uncle Project embarks on this new chapter, it invites individuals and organizations to join the mission of empowering children and young adults in care. Together, we can make a lasting difference in their lives.
