This decision was made public by the EWA Board of Directors, emphasizing Francesco's extensive background in journalism and nonprofit management.
A Seasoned Leader with a Vision
Francesco's career has been marked by her commitment to journalism and education. Before joining EWA, she served as the Executive Director at the National Press Club Journalism Institute for almost four years, where she played a crucial role in modernizing the organization and expanding its reach within the journalism community. Her leadership experience extends back to her roles in various journalistic and educational settings, which have equipped her with the strategic insights necessary for leading EWA into its next chapter.
According to Eva-Marie Ayala, President of the EWA Board, Francesco was chosen for her innovative approach and deep understanding of the challenges faced by education journalists today. "Beth stood out to the board as a thoughtful, innovative leader who understands both the profound importance of a free press and the increasingly difficult conditions under which journalists, especially education reporters, are working," stated Ayala.
Commitment to Education Journalism
Francesco began her career as an editor at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times in Texas. She then went on to become a freelance journalist for various regional and national publications. Additionally, she has spent significant time in academia, serving as a student media advisor and an adjunct journalism professor at institutions such as the University of Texas at Arlington and American University in Washington, D.C. Her dedication to education and journalism has always been intertwined, emphasizing the critical role that informed communities play in society.
In her own words, Francesco expressed her enthusiasm for joining EWA, stating, "EWA sits at the center of so much that has shaped my career and my sense of purpose in journalism, education, access to reliable information, and the power of informed communities." She is well aware of the significant impact that education journalists have in addressing key issues that families and communities face, recognizing the need for support in navigating the demanding landscape of today’s journalism.
Expanding Horizons for Education Journalists
During her tenure at the National Press Club Journalism Institute, Francesco implemented various initiatives to bolster the network of journalists. These included modernizing training programs, creating new fellowships, and developing scholarship opportunities aimed at supporting public health reporting and journalists operating under professional risks. Her experience will be invaluable as she works to increase membership outreach and expand resources available to education journalists through EWA.
Under her leadership, EWA intends to reinforce its commitment to enhancing rigorous journalism that informs the public and holds educational entities accountable. Francesco aims to broaden the organization’s services to its members in a way that not only elevates professionalism but also ensures that journalists are equipped with the necessary training and resources.
A Smooth Transition
The EWA Board also expressed gratitude to outgoing interim Executive Director Debbie Veney for her leadership during this crucial transitional phase. Veney's efforts were vital in maintaining the quality of programming and services offered to EWA's members.
