Discovering the Rich Heritage of Okayama Korakuen
On February 15, 2026, Okayama University, in collaboration with its library and the Faculty of Education, hosted a captivating workshop tailored for children at the renowned Okayama Korakuen. This event, titled "Discovering Okayama Korakuen: A Workshop for Kids," attracted 14 enthusiastic participants, including six elementary school students and their accompanying guardians.
Engaging Activities for Young Explorers
The workshop kicked off with educational storytelling led by students from the Faculty of Education. They employed the traditional Japanese art of
kamishibai, or paper theater, to bring to life the historical significance of Okayama Korakuen. This immersive introduction not only piqued the children's interest but also laid a foundation for the day's explorative activities.
Following the storytelling session, participants embarked on an adventurous journey through the park with a unique twist: they were armed with a large reproduction map from the Okayama University library. This giant map offered them a visual understanding of the layout and historical context of Korakuen.
Discovering the Park's Transformation
In groups, the children were encouraged to utilize a smaller replica map to guide their own explorations within the vast gardens. Their mission was to discern differences between the past and present landscapes of Korakuen. This interactive approach allowed them to step into the shoes of historians and uncover the rich tapestry of changes that had occurred over the years.
As they wandered through the picturesque gardens, the kids noted the architectural features, the arrangement of flora, and various landmarks that have made Korakuen a cherished site for generations. The objective was clear: to combine fun with education, all while developing a deeper appreciation for their local heritage.
Sharing Discoveries
The day culminated in an engaging presentation session where each group shared their explorations and discoveries with one another. The discussions sparked not only enthusiasm but also a sense of collaboration and shared learning among the participants. Through this lens, the children were able to connect the historical elements observed during their exploration with the stories they had learned prior.
This workshop exemplifies Okayama University's commitment to fostering relationships between education and cultural heritage. By providing young learners with the opportunity to engage with their environment, the university aims to cultivate a generation that values history and actively participates in preserving it.
