Students Unite for Miso Making in Kumenan Town
On January 15, 2026, students from Okayama University and Okayama University of Science gathered in Kumenan Town, Okayama Prefecture, to partake in a unique miso-making experience. This initiative was organized by the Research and Innovation Co-Creation Organization of Okayama University, as part of the Cabinet Office's project to enhance regional core university capabilities. The event took place at a renovated traditional house, known as Satogata-ya, which serves as a venue for community interaction and learning.
This program aims to address local issues and foster talent development through collaboration between the university and Kumenan Town. Participants were not only able to gain deeper insights into regional heritage and resources, but they also contributed to community revitalization efforts. The site, which was transformed from an old house into a space for learning and cultural exchange, provided an authentic atmosphere for the students to experience the area's traditions.
Under the guidance of community members who have been crafting miso for generations, the students engaged in every step of the process, from preparing steamed soybeans and koji to packing the final product into jars. Participants expressed profound appreciation for the experience, remarking, "It was inspiring to work on creating Kumenan's unique black soybean miso" and "Through interactions with local residents, I felt the charms of Kumenan Town come alive."
The initiative transcended mere participation; it focused on rediscovering local industries and cultures as valuable assets that could inspire future entrepreneurial ventures and expand community engagement. The miso-making workshop served as a valuable opportunity to consider the potential for innovation rooted in local resources, strengthening the collaboration between Okayama University and Kumenan Town.
Moving forward, Okayama University plans to continuously collaborate with local municipalities, residents, and educational institutions to cultivate new avenues for learning and challenges emerging from the community. The university's commitment to being a distinctive research entity that contributes to regional development remains unwavering, and further initiatives are expected in the future.
