Springfield's Dickerson Park Zoo Unveils New Bear Boardwalk

After more than four years of anticipation, Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield, Missouri finally opened its newly renovated Bear Boardwalk, marking a significant milestone for the zoo, which has entertained visitors for 103 years. The previous boardwalk, deemed unsafe due to structural damage, had been closed since November 2021, leading to a prolonged wait for animal lovers and visitors eager to catch a glimpse of their favorite creatures.

The spruced-up Bear Boardwalk spans 1.2 miles, winding visitors through exhibits showcasing a variety of North American wildlife. With the renovation kickstarted in March 2025, thanks to a $580,000 allocation from the Springfield City Council, the team at Hamby Construction worked diligently to ensure the remake maintained a balance between safety and the natural beauty of the zoo’s surroundings.

Zoo spokeswoman Joey Powell expressed gratitude toward members and the public for their patience during this time. She revealed that even though the swift foxes’ exhibit had been closed during renovations, the bears remained visible for viewing, keeping the excitement alive.

One of the newly added features is a covered gazebo, providing much-needed shade for both visitors and animals during hot sunny days, particularly important in a zoo that largely operates outdoors. In addition, upgraded structural elements include drilled concrete piers and steel fabrication, ensuring durability for years to come.

The new boardwalk not only enhances the visitor experience through improved animal viewing angles but also incorporates private holding areas designed for the animals’ medical care and daily management. Two substantial holding spaces, along with a new water line for the swift fox exhibit, aid keepers in maintaining high standards of animal welfare.

As Powell mentioned, “Guests often ask about water for the animals, and we are committed to ensuring every animal has a fresh water supply, often hidden from the main pathways for their comfort.”

With the grand opening coinciding with the zoo's busy event season from April through November, the revitalization of the Bear Boardwalk comes at an ideal time, promising exciting new experiences for guests. The zoo is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM and hosts various events, enriching community engagement and fostering a love for wildlife.

As visitors stroll along the new boardwalk, they can look forward to not just exploring the vibrant habitats of bears and swift foxes but also enjoying the serene surroundings enhanced by thoughtful design and innovative features.
