Nordic Semiconductor Enhances Cellular IoT Leadership with New Product Launches at MWC 2026
Nordic Semiconductor Boosts Cellular IoT Leaders1ip at MWC 2026
Nordic Semiconductor has made a significant stride in the cellular IoT arena with its latest product offerings unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona. The company, globally recognized for its energy-efficient wireless connectivity solutions, has expanded its already impressive portfolio to cater to the demands of a growing IoT landscape.
Future-ready Cellular IoT Portfolio
At the forefront of the company's strategy is a comprehensive lineup that includes new cellular product families, extending its industry-leading nRF91 series. This commitment to innovation ensures developers have access to the most efficient connectivity platforms to scale up to billions of devices worldwide. According to Vegard Wollan, CEO of Nordic Semiconductor, the goal is to simplify the development, deployment, and scaling of globally connected products—from chip to cloud.
Expansion with Two New Product Families
Nordic's expansion sees the introduction of two new product lines—the nRF92 and nRF93 series—bringing advanced features to existing nRF91 modules.
nRF92 Series: Next-Gen LTE-M/NB-IoT and Satellite NTN
The nRF92 series stands out as one of the smallest and most energy-efficient cellular solutions available today, integrating a powerful application MCU along with ultra-low-power edge AI through Nordic's Axon NPUs (Neural Processing Units). This series is designed for devices like smart meters, trackers, industrial sensors, and wearables, boasting an impressive battery lifespan of multiple years. Sample availability for major clients is underway, with general availability expected by early 2027.
nRF93 Series: LTE Cat 1 Cellular IoT
Another breakthrough is the nRF93M1 modules, providing robust performance with a promising throughput of 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink. These modules maintain Nordic's signature low power consumption while also incorporating global LTE support and integrated Wi-Fi positioning features. They are anticipated to be ideal for applications ranging from asset tracking to security devices and advanced measurement tools. Notably, leading clients are already gearing up to launch products using nRF93M1 by mid-2026.
Enhancements to the nRF91 Series
Additionally, the nRF91 series has witnessed significant upgrades. The nRF9151 is a premier LTE-M/NB-IoT module that now supports 3GPP-compliant GEO and LEO satellite NTN connectivity. This advancement is crucial for industries like logistics, smart agriculture, and energy management where remote connectivity is often essential. Introducing the nRF91M1, Nordic's compact smart-modem solution, it allows for a straightforward and quick integration of cellular connectivity. The user-friendly AT command interface and secure cloud integration facilitate rapid market entry for product designers.
Vision for 5G eRedCap
Nordic Semiconductor is also making strides in developing 5G eRedCap technologies, which promise ultra-low-power connections for the next wave of IoT applications. Collaborating with significant partners in this realm, Nordic aims to enhance the breadth of application coverage, ensuring that the company's long-term strategy aligns with future market demands.
According to Oyvind Birkenes, EVP of Long-Range at Nordic Semiconductor, this expansion marks a pivotal moment in their strategic roadmap, offering a unified and comprehensive product lineup that provides developers with necessary clarity and confidence while navigating the evolving network landscape.
